Here's something I've learned: all it takes is a group of motivated people with pure intentions, a good idea, and bucket loads of drive to make something significant happen.

This is what we've learned in running The Big Food Drive, and it's been especially true in launching our first food garden at Bhongolethu Foundation's school.

I think the enormity of some undertakings is what discourages people. We see this mountain of a problem and get discouraged thinking 'what can I, just one person, do to make a difference'. And then we get paralysed by inaction.

But we can ALWAYS do something with causes and initiatives we care about. ALWAYS

I have a simple framework for this for how I approach causes I care about. I call it DONATE. DO. AMPLIFY.

DONATE - as it says on the box. Send funds and resources to support the organisations you care about to fuel their fire.

DO - no resource is more valuable than people power and people's time. If you have hours to spare, donate them to causes you care about.

AMPLIFY - the easiest of the lot. If you're unable to spare your time or have already allocated your resources elsewhere, then taking the time to share cool initiatives with your networks is a very powerful tool. The more your enthusiasm for it comes across in how you communicate it, the more people will care too.

Anyway, this post is a two-parter. First to say you're right, we can't achieve anything on our own. We need community action for massive change.

And second to thank you all for your response to The Big Food Drive's Community Garden which today is providing meals every day for more than 200 school children.

Go look into the work your favourite organisations are doing and find out what help they need, and if you want to support what we're doing at The Big Food Drive, you can learn more about our work here: http://thebigfooddrive.org

Meet Tyler, our Unsung Hero of the week!

Director and teacher at Bhongulethu Foundation, Cape Town South Africa.

Tyler, runs a wonderful school to support children from foundation phase through to grade 3 in the local township. Not only does she supply an excellent education to these children but also provides them with a cooked meal each day. With the recent lockdown this means that these children are no longer at school and are therefore not receiving their daily meals. Many of the families who attend the school have reached out to Tyler during the lockdown to say that they have no food and are afraid of starving as the lock down has now been extended. So Tyler has taken it upon herself and her extended network to pack food boxes for each family at the school so that the family has food for the duration of the lockdown! ❤️

Thank you Tyler!

Thank you Jo Hunter Adams for contributing toward our Spring day. Jo donated two trees to our school Bhongolethu Foundation So much ❤ and gratitude ✨
#mandeladay2019 This year we decided to give back in a way that contributed to the growth and success of our younger generation.

Education is key to unlock the golden door of freedom🔐...

So we partnered with Readerswarehouse Kloof Street who generously donated some reading material towards our Mandela Day initiative and spent our 67- minutes at the Bhongolethu Foundation

Bhongelethu Primary School provides children with a safe and nurturing education full of rich opportunities to learn 📚.

We were praised with thanks and yummy cupcakes so even though our mission was to give back. The favour was returned.

The gift of giving doesn’t end here nor should the concept of Mandela Day either‼️

We would like to say a big thank you to Work For Love - Bhongolethu Foundation for having us, Reader's Warehouse for coming to the party at such last minute and to our Marketing Manager Bianca MacDonald for making all of this happen ❤️

Already 1 month ago, one of the most, if not the most, beautiful days of my life!

Thanks again to the whole Bhongolethu Foundation family! ❤️

Alright Ladies and Gentlemen, finally all is coming together with our first LARGE SCALE ECOBRICK AND NATURAL BUILDING STRUCTURE of the year!

This is for Jade Bothma, a 13 year old with a dream to save a fishes home by building a home out of Ecobricks ❤️ Together with her mom, Nina we are project managing this dream for Jade who started her own NGC Oceano Reddentes last year 🌸

The real beneficiary will be the Caretaker of Bhongolethu Foundation and his wife and 6 year old daughter ( thats her hanging with Jade today, getting to know each other ) and the build will extend to build a second structure to house a sewing room for the woman of ReLife Cape Town who make reusable bags out of pet food bags ( otherwise non recyclable ) - this wooden house where the family currently live will be taken down and we will rebuild!

We are still in fundraising phase and putting together the workshop slots where you all can join so please watch this space to support in both ways to make this dream a reality :)

Please don’t forget Waste-ED and Oceano Reddentes Ecobrick drop off points will go towards this build but ARE ONLY FOR PERSONAL/ HOME BRICKS and that all bulk brick makers must contact us before starting Ecobricks to ensure use in our builds but will have the opportunity to come and build with us in workshops throughout the year that we will announce here ❤️

Positive behavior is the best behaviour!
At Bhongolethu, we have adopted a new behaviour strategy whereby teachers focus on positive behavior. Positive behavior gets rewarded with tokens and tokens buy kids treats and spoils. Negative behaviour is taking a back seat.
The whole school is doing exceptionally well! The teachers have noticed a remarkable improvement in behaviour.
The 2 values that have been covered thus far are being respectful and being safe. Next week we will be focusing on being responsible.

@actioningchange @evolveabroad @leaglobalpathways and In2Africa really know how to spoil the children at Bhongolethu, especially for Mandela day!
Thank you spending much more than 67 minutes on us today.

The day started with tree planting. We were gifted with 23 fruit trees. They have been planted in such a way that they will create a little forest for the children to enjoy once established.

After tree planting the teams worked on fixing some of our playground equipment while the kids played soccer and jumped on the jumping castles with the volunteers from Madrid.

The smell of traditional boerewors cooking on the braai engulfed our senses and then filled the hungry tummies. Thank you for all the wonderful spoils!

Happy Nelson Mandela day again 😊

We have been graced with another phenomenol volunteer at Bhongolethu, Michal 🙂

Michal is from Holland (or the Netherlands), she currently lives in the Hague. In a nutshell, she studied Cultural Anthropology and completed her master's in International Development. She has always had a calling to do some development work, preferably somewhere in Africa. She was working at the municipality of the Hague but noticed that she could be making a bigger impact and more direct impact than she was capable of in her current job. So she quit her job which opened new doors, new opportunities. She met someone in Portugal who happens to be the best friend of Florian - he runs the NGO Mon Coeur in the area, together with his wife Marie. And before she knew it, she arrived in Cape Town, helping set up an after school care programme. And of course, helping out at Bhongolethu!
She loves being directly involved with the kids - "they're full of energy, so eager to learn, grateful. It's been very rewarding to work with them. I'm super thankful to be here!" Michal.
Michal loves it so much here that she has decided to return again after this visit.
Thank you for your dedication, commitment, dance lessons, patience, warm heart and quirkiness.
See you soon 💗 @michrago

Having fun with cursive writing!
Learners were asked to draw the requested cursive letter on their friends back. This activity is a sensory rich experience.
I highly doubt they will be forgetting the letters s and t in cursive anytime soon. 😊

The Grade 3s ended their Life Skills theme on Insects by playing a game.
The children had to work in teams to find all the hidden insects in the soil.
This was such fun!
The next part of the activity got very messy!
The children had to pretend to be dung beetles and see which team could make the biggest dung ball. Getting messy really gets the senses working!

The Casting Co generously donated quite a large amount of Easter eggs this year. The children were overjoyed with kindness and Easter egg hunts!! It is most apparent how the children know in their hearts that Easter is a time of sharing. They were sharing their eggs so effortlessly with their friends and making their friends Easter cards. We wish all our followers, friends and family a blessed Easter.

With love and thanks from Bhongolethu😇
