Is your Grade 6 or 7 child dreading the next Maths test?
We are in term 2...and it means one thing...EXAMS are coming!! Exam season doesn't have to mean meltdowns. In my small Maths Groups, Grade 6 and 7 learners build real understanding — so they walk into tests with confidence, not panic. I provide small groups (max 5/6 learners), summaries, encouragement and exam preparation...and a teacher who actually finds the gap. My groups are in person in close to Sonstraalheights (Durbanville) and I am less than 1km from Curro Primary School. Contact me for more info!

Algebra is where Grade 8 confidence goes to die — unless someone explains it properly.
Algebra in Grade 8 and 9 isn't just harder — it's a completely different way of thinking. Most learners who 'can't do Algebra' were never taught the concept underneath the rule. My small groups fix that — with small classes, proper explanations, and a teacher who won't move on until everyone understands. My small groups are in Kleinbron Park, next to Sonstraal Heights (Durbanville) and less than 1km from Curro Primary Schoo. Contact me at 078 633 0466 for more details.

3 reasons your child struggles with multiplication and division (that nobody talks about) 👇
1️⃣ They were taught to memorise — not understand. When they forget one fact, they have nothing to fall back on.
2️⃣ There's a gap from earlier years. Maths builds on itself. A small crack in Grade 3 becomes a wall in Grade 5.
3️⃣ More practice of the same thing doesn't help. If the foundation is missing, repetition just adds frustration.
The solution isn't more worksheets. It's finding the right gap — and fixing it.
I've created a FREE guide and quick assessment for parents — no teaching experience needed. Takes 15 minutes.

Does your child freeze the moment multiplication or division comes up — even after practising? 😔 It's not laziness. It's not a lack of effort. And it's definitely not that they're "just not a Maths person."
Most children who struggle with multiplication and division are missing one thing: a foundation that was never properly built.
The good news? It can be fixed — and you don't need to be a Maths teacher to help. I've put together a FREE Parent Guide + Quick Assessment that takes just 15 minutes and shows you exactly where the gap is.

At the beginning of this term, I began teaching multiplication and division to a Grade 5 learner. The learner had absolutely no understanding of multiplication and division. The learner could only do multiplication sums with 3, 5, and 10 times tables and had no strategies for division.
👏I am so proud to say that today we moved from the semi-concrete intervention phase to the abstract phase! 👏
The learner now has a strategy for any multiplication and division sum. Some answers the Grade 5 learner already knows ‘off by heart’ without any ‘mental drill work’! It takes the learner a while to do these sums, but I know the learner will get there!! There are no shortcuts on this journey!!
Below is an example of how the learner currently works!

Do you have a high-achieving child who seems overwhelmed with Mathematics? Is this troubling? Are you struggling to understand the reason for this?
We usually look for signs of math anxiety in childre who have trouble in class or get low test scores in Mathematics. But children who do well can also feel tense, worried, or uncomfortable about math. These children are often overlooked, and they do not get the chance to notice, talk about, or work through their anxiety.
What Causes Math Anxiety in High-Achieving children?
- Children who do well in math may expect too much from themselves. If they have trouble maintaining their high grades or rankings, this can make them anxious.
- In competitive settings, children might worry about being judged if they cannot solve problems quickly or if their test results are lower than expected.
- Children often compare their results to their classmates. If they feel they are not doing as well, it can lower their confidence and increase their anxiety.
- Moving from one school level to another, such as from elementary/primary to middle or high school, can make children/teenager anxious.
- A heavier homework load and more challenging math topics can also lead to math anxiety.
- Believing that math skills are something you are born with, instead of something you can improve with practice, can make math anxiety worse. If children think they succeed only because they are smart, they may feel unsure or anxious when they cannot solve a problem right away.
- Parents and teachers can pass their own worries about math on to learners. For example, if a teacher often says that math is hard, children might start to believe it too.
It is important to recognise that Maths anxiety is not only linked to poor Maths performance. If this is the situation in your home, take time to discuss the issue with your child. Try to identify the trigger and provide your child with guidance on how to deal with the situation. Maths anxiety should not keep your child from taking on STEM subjects or studying a field related to Mathematics!

💔 Is your child crying over Maths already — and it’s only the first month of school?
Take a deep breath.
This is more common than you think — and it doesn’t mean your child “can’t do Maths.”
When a child feels overwhelmed, their brain goes into survival mode...and a brain in survival mode cannot learn.
🧠 This is usually not a Maths ability problem — it’s emotional overload.
Here’s what helps:
1️⃣ Regulate emotions before doing Maths
If your child is upset, don’t start the work yet.
👉 Do the following before any Math work:
• Sit next to your child (not across the table).
• Use a calm voice: “You’re safe. We’ll do this together.”
• Take 3 slow breaths together.
• Offer a short break (water, stretch, toilet).
🧠 A calm brain learns. An anxious brain cannot.
2️⃣ Break Maths into small, manageable chunks
A full page can feel terrifying.
👉 What to do:
• Cover the page and show only 1–2 questions at a time.
• Set a 10–15 minute timer (use your discretion here).
• Stop for a break when the timer ends.
• Repeat the above until the work for the day is done.
✔️ Progress builds confidence.
3️⃣ Reduce pressure and increase safety
Pressure shuts learning down.
👉 What to do:
• Say: “You don’t have to get everything right.”
• Let your child use drawings or objects to assist with learning.
• Give your child a strategy to solve the Math problem.
• Sit with them while they work — your presence matters!
❌ Avoid: “Hurry up” or “You should know this.”
4️⃣ Celebrate small wins to rebuild confidence
Confidence grows from small successes, not big praise.
👉 What to do:
• Celebrate finishing a few questions
• Say: “You kept trying — that matters.”
• End on something your child can do well
🌱 Confidence grows when effort is seen.
Crying, shutting down, or avoiding Maths is a signal, not a failure.
Your child’s brain is asking for support, pacing, and reassurance — not more pressure.
🤍 The most powerful message you can give your child right now is:
“You are safe. You are capable. We’ll figure this out together.”
Early support changes everything.
When a child gets the right support early on, confusion doesn’t turn into fear, and overwhelm doesn’t turn into long-term Maths anxiety. With guidance, children learn how to understand Maths, trust themselves, and approach challenges with confidence — not tears.
✨ If your child is already feeling overwhelmed, don’t wait.
