"The ASSA Banking Seminar 2026, hosted at FirstRand, brought together actuaries, banking professionals, regulators and industry leaders for a day of insightful discussions on the future of banking and the evolving role of the actuarial profession. Across all presentations, a common theme emerged: the banking landscape is changing rapidly, driven by technological innovation, regulatory transformation, changing customer expectations and increasing complexity in risk management. As these changes accelerate, actuaries are increasingly being called upon to combine technical excellence with strategic thinking, adaptability and leadership."

Every model starts with assumptions. The most critical assumption you will ever set is the vision of the professional you intend to be. ASSA Public Interest Sessional: Data, Modelling and Decision-Making in Local Government

The City of Cape Town's Research Division will present a sessional highlighting the use of data, analytics, and quantitative modelling in supporting evidence-based decision-making within the City.

The session will include presentations on the findings of the City's recent Household Survey, as well as a selection of other data analytics and research projects currently informing policy and service delivery.

The sessional aims to showcase the diverse range of public-sector challenges that rely on quantitative skills and analytical thinking. It will also explore potential career pathways into public service for students and actuarial professionals, while fostering greater collaboration between the City of Cape Town, the University of Cape Town (UCT), and the Actuarial Society of South Africa.
