Before the long weekend, we stopped by our collaboration schools, Apex Primary School. and Apex High School, and gave our often behind-the-scenes Acorn Team a sweet treat 🍫 to commemorate this special holiday.

From us to all of you, !

From students 🤓 to teachers 🧑‍🏫 to governance 📑 and 🛠operations: We believe the support we provide our collaboration schools, Apex Primary School.and Apex High School, should be all-encompassing.

We call this our 'whole-school approach.'

Apex High School is a new no-fee dual medium (Afrikaans and English) public high school that opened its doors in January 2018. Acorn Education (www.acorneducation.org.za) has partnered with the school as part of the Collaboration Schools Pilot Programme - a public private partnership programme in the Western Cape. The school opened with only grade 8 and grade 9 learners in 2018 and is now a full school hosting the first group of Matriculants in 2021.

Today the Legends had their last assembly of their high school career! It feels like yesterday that Day 1 of Gr.12 2022 started, and here we are at the edge of the end!

The Gr.12 teachers all had the opportunity to address the Legends by sharing favourite moments and wishing them well on the final stretch ahead!

Here are some of the memories amd words of encouragement that resonated in the hall:

💪🏽Don't be a parasite! A parasite dies without a host.

💪🏽Here’s to the crazy ones, the misfits, the rebels, the troublemakers, the round pegs in the square holes…. The ones who see things differently–they’re not fond of rules…. You can quote them, disagree with them, glorify or vilify them, but the only thing you can’t do is ignore them because they change things…. They push the human race forward, and while some may see them as the crazy ones, we see genius, because the ones who are crazy enough to think that they can change the world are the ones who do. – Steve Jobs

💪🏽I will always remember your strong and unique personalities

💪🏽I will remember this day forever. The way you show love and appreciation for each of the teachers who spoke to you

💪🏽Always stay oppit

💪🏽I've missed more than 9,000 shots in my career. I've lost almost 300 games. Twenty-six times, I've been trusted to take the game winning shot and missed. I've failed over and over and over again in my life. And that is why I succeed. - Michael Jordan

To the class of 2022 - we wish you only the best for the NSC exams! Here's to ending your high school career on the highest note possible!

Happy World Teacher Day!

On world Teacher, it is fitting to reflect on the team we have at Apex High School. As a teacher myself, I know and understand the hard work, sacrifices, time, patience and energy that is required to teach at our school. Teaching is difficult. The workload is practically bottomless and school days are beyond hectic.
Our teachers spend hours constructing the perfect lesson plan, tailored to the needs of every child in their class. They try to predict possible gaps and then teach in a different way to close that gap. They collect data to measure if every child could master the objective, and if they couldn't they make time to reteach it. At times you teach from 7h45 in the morning until 15h00 in the afternoon. Then you make copies for the next day, make time to attend meetings to plan a matric farewell, see kids for extra class and leave school just after 17h00. Then you take a 2 hour break and start planning for the next day, mark scripts or support parents and children via WhatsApp.

It is tough, but what makes it tougher is the fact that you do not only deal with that. You have to also teach some learners manners, deal with disrespect, experience the trauma they experience, give advice, adapt to a changing curriculum and the demands of the system.

It is no wonder that we have a shortage of teachers in South Africa.

Today, on world teacher day, I would like to thank every teacher at Apex High School, not only for your sacrifices and hard work, but the fact that you choose Apex every day, even if the expectations are higher and demands are more. You are changing the trajectory of every child in our school. Maybe they do not always show their appreciation, but the impact you make cannot be measured.

Thank you so much for doing what you do to the best of your ability day after day. Thank you for always walking the extra mile. Thank you for exceeding all expectations and being the best teachers in the world. I salute you for this.

Apex can be nothing without you.

Thank you. Thank you. Thank you.
