What an beautifully diverse day in the garden!
We began our morning with DIT(Do It Together) Tuesdays, where new faces joined our weekly gathering that seeks to share skills that grow people and planet. After lengthy observations and testing, we have placed our focus on building more microbial rich soil while dealing with local organic waste and biomass (thank you Palmer rd) and creating an diverse indigenous plant system that acts as a windbreak for the food gardens. As the windbreak group ploughed on, the local village school classes took part by creating seed bombs that were dispersed into open garden spaces. Thank you all of you that participated and watch this space grow!!

Stop doing it by yourself, grab some friends and lets do it together again next Tuesday at 10am.

Upcycling Jam 27/03/2018

Last weeks Upcycling Jam was so much fun. Preceded by a ToonZA workshop by Andy Mason - "What's in Yo Bin?" where teams were given a bin of trash with which to create an artwork. The exhibition was a showcase of ingenuity and definitely made you reconsider what you throw in yo' bin. PS: There's no such place as Away. StartUpcycling ToonZA

Global Recycling Day 19/03/2018

Yesterday we spent the morning combing the beach and Vlei for rubbish. There was plenty. Even when at first glance an area looked clean, as soon as you scratch the tiniest bit below the bush / rock / seaweed / sand, layers and layers of human waste in various stages of decay become exposed. This highlighted the urgency for serious upstream work - we shouldn't be picking up the aftermath, we should be stopping it at the source. StartUpcycling

The Start Upcycling group arrived from all corners of the globe yesterday, and after a candle lit courtyard dinner to the sounds of the Steve Newman Trio, today was kick started by the different countries presenting the upcycling initiatives they are actively involved in at home. From Trashion Shows to board games that educate children about different plastics, and everything inbetween, there was no shortage of inspiration. What a crew.

In January, we were part of a Resilience and Sustainable Youth Programme. 7 amazing young girls from Brazil, came to explore our hood and were particularly interested in experiencing the coming together of diverse community to co-create resilience.

Here, we spent some time exploring aromatic and endemic plants in different urban gardens and boxes as we strolled through Muizenberg.

This exchange of knowledge between our two cultures from the South was exciting and very enriching. We hope to be seeing more of them in the future.

Start Upcycling is a group of individuals from ten different countries coming to Muizenberg as a part of their quest to learn from other countries about different waste challenges and to explore how upcycling could offer solutions to sustainable living and employment opportunities. Come and meet them whilst having fun cleaning up our hood:

Forget DIY, Tuesday's at The Hive are about Doing it Together. Last Tuesday, From 10:00 to 16:00, 8 participants joined and learnt how to make Comfrey Salve & Cough Syrup.

The first half-day was foraging down Palmer Road and our community garden at Masque Theatre. An opportunity to discover our close environment and to share personal knowledge about plants. Calvin, our facilitator, provided a compelling book about South African Plants and good advice.

At the end, each participant left with their own samples.
