We're trying to get through to everyone but some aren't on Facebook. If you know of any past pupil of the 2001 class that's not on socials, please could you ask them to email [email protected] and I'll send the details. Pinelands High School is a co-ed state high school, situated in Pinelands, Cape Town, South Africa. School is, first and foremost, a place where children come to learn, and the pursuit of academic excellence remains one of our strategic goals.

However, the life lessons that are learnt at school are often learnt outside the classroom. At Pinelands High, we offer our pupils many opportunities to become involved in sport, music, drama and a variety of other cultural activities. We believe in educating the whole child, and give all the children in our care the opportunity to find their own niche and excel in their own particular way. The yo

Cultural Assembly - The Transformation Committee took on a student-lead initiative to facilitate a cultural assembly where a few students from different cultural backgrounds could share a glimpse of what their culture means to them. The intention of this assembly was to create a space that celebrated diversity while also claiming a united identity as culturally rich South African people.

The assembly consisted of performances and presentations from a variety of students including a runway show of traditional clothing, a personal reflection from a member of our Christian Union, a South Asian dance, a poem recited by members of the Muslim Students Association, poetry on some students’ experiences of what being coloured in our country means to them, and a poem performed by a student about how our family heritage plays a role in shaping who we are and our cultural expressions.

The assembly ended with a recorded interview between staff member, Ms Gilmour, and Dr Mamphela Ramphele where Dr Ramphele shared her insights and advice with the students. She spoke about what it means to celebrate difference while claiming a unified African identity and gave advice to our students pertaining to how they can view themselves as the leaders of the present and the future of this country. The assembly sparked important transformative conversations amongst students and staff which we hope will continue as we remain committed to becoming a school that is actively engaging with our unique context and the importance of our role as a school in pioneering transformation in our communities. We look forward to continuing these conversations and to the next cultural assembly.

An absolute icon, a giant of the South African and International Literary landscape visited our shores yesterday. Dr Diana Ferrus, addressed our Grade 10's to give more insight into her poem, 'Vir Sara Baartman' / 'I've come to take you home'. This poem is widely considered as the catalyst for the return of Ms Baartman's remains to South Africa. And what an absolute honour it was to just and listen to Dr Ferrus, as she went about doing what she does best.

Congratulations to Josh Lugt on placing 3rd in the Cape Town Trail Marathon U21 category this last weekend. Josh was the youngest competitor in this new marathon trail through Table Mountain National Park with a 2200m ascent over 56kms. He finished 50th in the Open Men category in a time of 7 hours, 42 mins.

Josh started training in January with an average weekly distance between 40km-100km. In addition he worked on strength, focusing on control and balance over explosive movements and heavy weights, to protect against injury.

‘The training was definitely the biggest learning experience and required me to constantly remember the idea that discipline is what takes over when motivation takes a day off. I found I focused far better on my academics on the days when I did some form of training. Be that an endurance run, a speed session, hill sprints up the Thompson hall stairs, a gym session or even a session on the slackline to improve my balance. I also found my thoughts clearer in general and funny enough, I had more energy.’ Josh Lugt

Book tickets for The Boy Who Fell From The Roof

Our dramatic productions are back! Don’t miss out. Tickets are on sale online via Quicket or they can be purchased at the school shop.

Book tickets for The Boy Who Fell From The Roof This year the school presents Juliet Jenkin’s “The Boy Who Fell From The Roof”, a story about love, death, friendship, being q***r, and growing up. The play is directed by our Head of Drama, Ms Tara Notcutt.

23/07/2022

Pinelands High School is excited to welcome the return of their well-known and much-loved annual dramatic production.

This year the school presents Juliet Jenkin’s “The Boy Who Fell From The Roof”, a story about love, death, friendship, being q***r, and growing up. The play is directed by our Head of Drama, Ms Tara Notcutt.

This universal coming-out tale is set in Cape Town, South Africa and sees the boy, Simon, and his best friend, Georgina, in their final year of school. We meet Simon's mother, Patricia, and Leonard, a university student. These characters tell you about their relationships with Simon, supported by a large chorus who help to tell the story.

The play was first presented in 2005 as part of the Artscape New Writing Programme and has been performed to great acclaim at the National Arts Festival in Makhanda and the Hilton Arts Festival in KwaZulu-Natal.
