“N” is for “neighbour”

Every week we aim to find relevant and teachable moments for our ‘Sound of The Week’. As our school currently has a building site for a neighbour, we invited them to send across a construction vehicle to visit our children.

And that’s how a telescopic handler came to school! What a treat! Thank you, Big Ben 🚧

Because every adventure is better with a friend, no matter how young 🐝

In honour of Women’s Day, let’s pay tribute to the four women who led the women’s march to the Union Buildings on 9 August 1956 to demand equal rights for South African women: Rahima Moosa, Lilian Ngoyi, Helen Joseph and Sophia Williams-De Bruyn. May our kind and curious young ladies at Honeycomb continue their legacy!

We’re remembering Annette Thompson, founding teacher & principal of Honeycomb, on what would have been her 69th birthday. Her legacy lives on with us at our very special school 🐝

Slipper Day! Today we supported The Reach For A Dream Foundation’s campaign to help support kids with life-threatening illnesses to reach their dreams 💛

Ahh for the love of bees! Let’s look after the bees who work Bee-hind the scenes in all we eat! Thank you Montessori Centre South Africa for reminding us of this important information to Bee Mindful of:

- Plant a bee-friendly garden
- Provide water sources for bees in your environment
- Support local beekeepers and honey producers

Wishing our Honeycomb moms & mother figures the most wonderful Mother’s Day this weekend. Your little ones so enjoyed baking for you, reciting poems and singing songs to celebrate you this morning!

Our older children made vases by decorating glass bottles ahead of time for a mom-and-me flower arranging activity, while the younger children made necklaces and broaches with their moms. What a happy morning for us all.

Spontaneous nature appreciation. I think we can all hear the “wow” in this photo as our children take a closer look at a praying mantis discovered in our garden 🌿

A value that guides our school day at Honeycomb! 🐝 Scroll across to the last pic to see community in action: Today, in our toddler environment, one child began peeling a naartjie over the earth bin when she noticed a friend in need, and so stopped to help her friend with peeling her banana.

While doing this, a third child stepped in and completed the naartjie peeling for the first child while she was busy helping her friend with the banana 🍌 🍊

Honeycomb Montessori was at the 22nd annual South African Montessori Association Conference hosted by the Sustainability Institute in Stellenbosch this weekend. The theme of the conference was ‘Weaving Golden Threads’ and we had such a special time creating stronger ties.

Montessorians from all over united and shared stories of our human connections. We are standing together to see every child benefit from Montessori's most precious and prized pedagogy and seeing her education for peace live on.

Did you know that we offer an extended day from 12.30 to 5.00pm?

Extended day, or aftercare, is based on the same principles that frame our school day - free play is supervised and the children have access to all the Montessori equipment. Our children’s development requires real experiences so this is a device and screen-free environment 🤸🏾‍♀️ 🎨 ☀️

Sliding into Term 2! Welcome back Honeycombers, we’re ready for you 🐝

We’ve come to the end of Term One and have thoroughly enjoyed exploring the colours, along with our ‘Honeycomb Rainbow of Values’. Thank you to the parents for making our Colour Celebration possible and a BIG thank you to CareCreative for repainting our rainbow so beautifully - our children loved watching the rainbow take shape!

We hope that your school holidays are filled with many opportunities to explore these values further with your children 🌈

“It will be necessary to look to children for help if the world is to be made better.“

The sweetest story you’ll hear all day and this photo sums it up perfectly 🐝 The context is that it has been ‘Purple Week’ with the value being ‘We are open’. Three days ago, a child asked if they could make banana bread again but sadly there was only one banana in the fruit bowl which wasn’t enough.

The next day the children eagerly checked the fruit bowl and there were three - just what the recipe needed! Unfortunately one banana was eaten while they weren’t watching and so their baking plans had to be put on hold. This brings us to today where the the bananas in the fruit bowl were guarded all morning until it was time for baking - success! What a wonderful example of teamwork and a child-led learning opportunity. Follow the child they say!
