SHAWCO Education

SHAWCO Education Helping children learn.

The SHAWCO Vision: Working together towards informed, healthy and thriving communities.

The SHAWCO Mission: To practice and promote responsible citizenship in the South African context through health, education and social entrepreneurship initiatives. We create a supportive space for experiential learning and teaching, addressing inequality through innovative and sustainable approaches to community engagement. Education projects aim to impact the academic ability of learners, as well as to provide safe spaces in which learners can engage in personal development through arts, sports, camps, outings and workshops. The overall holistic development of learners is also balanced by the experience, development and leadership opportunity of the students who volunteer and become leaders in the sector. SHAWCO has 14 student-run projects operating from the SHAWCO centres (Khayelitsha, Kensington, and Manenberg) as well from schools in the communities (Nyanga, Imizamo Yethu, and Mitchell's Plain). Volunteers are transported to and from the centres where they engage with learners using a structured curriculum. Junior projects focus on literacy and numeracy, whereas intermediate and senior projects focus on English, Maths, Physical Science and Life Skills. CONTACT US:
