Hoerikwaggo kids are sea and mountain kids!
Hoerikwaggo – ‘the mountain in the sea’ – is what the indigenous Khoikhoi inhabitants of the Cape called Table Mountain and his peninsula companions.

The Hoerikwaggo Kids programme is designed for home-schooling families. We aim to get kids excited about exploring and through this, develop a skill to observe detail. Good observation in nature takes a child to a new level of understanding, enjoying and loving creation.
Our digital preparation-lessons take the family on a journey using carefully selected videos and research materials, to discover a new creature every month. Then we venture out on our big expedition to find our creature.

‘It is a wonderful way to add science and nature study lessons to the home-school day, knowing that the education provided is of the highest quality, and a hands-eyes-and-ears based lesson for the auditory and kinaesthetic learners, while still receiving full lesson notes to cater for the visual learners. It is often a welcome break in the month from lessons at home, and a much-needed breath of fresh air in the midst of our busy lives!’ - Caroline Gill

The Hoerikwaggo Kids meet once a month in a safe natural area to participate in a nature lesson, hike and even some snorkelling. We explore the fabulous fynbos and wild shores of Cape Town and take hands and action with others to protect our biodiversity hotspot! We love local!

Where do we meet?
Safe natural sites are on the decrease on the peninsula. We take very careful consideration when deciding on a meeting place.
We love exploring the Table Mountain National Park, from Cape Town to Cape Point.
Venues are chosen by taking in consideration the theme of the lesson and the time of the year and closer to the date, the weather.

When do we meet?
The groups usually meet at 09:30 to around 12:30 on a weekday morning once a month, January to December.
We have various groups ranging in ages from 3-18 years. Younger siblings also tag along.

How much does it cost?
The membership fee is for children only and per term. Membership is for children between the ages of 3 and 18 years as specified per group.
Hoerikwaggo Groups 1-9: R 380.00 per child; 4+ siblings R 1 370.00
Hoerikwaggo Mini 1 & 2: R 350.00
You are recommended to purchase a My Green Card or Wildcard for affordable entry to the National Park. We enter pay gates about 3-4 times a year.
(SANParks issues us an educational entry permit which allows families operating with Green Cards, to pay only R18 entry fee for kids.)
Membership fees are payable upfront on a termly basis.

What do we do?
Every monthly lesson consists of a digital home lesson and an outing. Parents can spend as much time on the lesson as they choose. These lessons cover the background information and knowledge needed to fully participate in the practical outdoor lesson. The outdoor lesson will always include an investigation section and then an action section where we do something to make a change, show appreciation and respect.

How do I apply?
We have many different groups to choose from. See where your family will fit in best and follow. Hoerikwaggo 1-9, Mini & Mini 2.
