Fine-tune your immune system

With blooming flowers, longer days and warmer evenings, changing of seasons from cold to warm often brings with it a sense of excitement and happiness for all that new. But we still need to ensure that we continue to support the functioning of your immune system seasons at every mealtime. How? By including a variety of food types to your everyday diet and leading healthy active lifestyle.

Put simply, the immune system is your body’s built-in ‘army’ that’s ready to protect you by identifying viruses, bacteria or parasites or other threats and springing into action to eliminate the threat via various ways like producing antibodies. To function well, that army needs to be supported by a balanced and varied diet. Here are two simple ways you can support proper functioning of your immune system through diet alone:

Eat micronutrient-rich fruit and vegetables

Fruit and vegetables can contain micronutrients that can function as antioxidants* that help to protect against cell and tissue damage caused by normal, everyday metabolism, and thus they can play a role in our wellbeing. For example, vitamin C and copper can help protect cell against oxidative stress.

Try: Broccoli, tomatoes, pumpkin, carrots, spinach, berries

Support your gut with fibre-rich food

Your digestive system is playing an important role in, housing trillions of bacteria with vital functions such as helping digest fibre, producing vitamin K and B12 and protecting the gut from harmful bacteria. Some fibres that are in our diet can be fermented by gut bacteria. Fermentable fibre is converted into metabolites like short-chain fatty acids [1]. On the other hand, fibres like oat grain fibre contributes to an increase in faecal bulk [2, 3].

Try: whole wheat bread, brown rice, cereals, lentils, apple or flax seeds

Chocolate & Coconut Freezer Fudge

Serves: 12
Prep time: 12 minutes
Ingredients:

3 scoops Herbalife Formula 1 Smooth Chocolate Flavoured Shake Mix
15 g cocoa powder
60 g coconut oil
60 ml full-fat coconut milk
60 g raisins
1 tbsp desiccated coconut

Method:

In a food processor or blender, combine all of the ingredients except for the desiccated coconut. Blend until smooth.

Line a small baking dish with cling film and transfer the mixture to the dish, smoothing it down with a spatula to create a nice even layer.

Sprinkle with desiccated coconut and transfer to the freezer to set for around 30 minutes. Once firm, slice into bite-sized pieces and enjoy!

Your freezer fudge can be stored in a sealed container in the freezer for up to 3 months.

Mix it up: Instead of making bite-sized pieces, try pouring the mixture into small lolly moulds for the ultimate protein popsicle

Men’s Skincare: Here are the Facts

So, what should every man do when it comes to his daily skincare regimen?

Use a Facial Cleanser

You may have gotten used to using regular bar soap, but that isn’t doing your skin any good. Bar soaps can contain harsh detergents that aren’t meant for the face. They can also disrupt your skin’s pH balance and strip it of beneficial oils. Choose a facial cleanser that can target excess oil, thoroughly remove dirt, oil, sweat, debris and provide much needed hydration. Look for formulas that do not contain sulphates or parabens, but do contain antioxidant vitamins and Aloe Vera for added hydration.

Start Exfoliating

Due to the thickness of a man’s skin, exfoliation is necessary and can be done more frequently than a woman. Scrub away that dead skin build-up on a regular basis, which will help clear out your pores and ease the frequency of white and blackheads.

Skip the Aftershave

Most post-shave products contain alcohol, hence the burning and stinging effect when applied to the skin. It’s time to ditch those irritating products because they just aren’t healthy for your skin. They can cause dead skin cell build-up, which causes hair strands to get trapped in the skin, leading to ingrown hairs and irritation. Invest in an antioxidant-rich facial skin toner that is alcohol-free to help soothe the skin post-shaving.

Apply Sunscreen

Applying sunscreen every day before going outdoors is especially important for men. Men tend to spend more time outdoors than women and are more exposed to environmental factors. There’s also a greater risk of incidental sun exposure just from walking the dog, doing a bit of garden work or simply driving a car (the sun’s rays can pe*****te through glass). So, men should always apply a moisturiser containing SPF 30 sunscreen to help fend off the signs of aging.

These Skinny Nacho Boats are awesome if you’ve had a quick jog or workout session that is 30 minutes or less. Not only are they low in carbs but they are soooo flavourful!

Ingredients:

😛 1 pack Roasted Soya Beans
😛 1 scoop (14 g) Protein Drink Mix
😛 3 bell peppers
😛 1 pound lean ground turkey
😛 1 teaspoon chili powder
😛 1 teaspoon cumin
😛 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
😛 1/4 teaspoon kosher or sea salt
😛 3/4 cup salsa (no sugar added)
😛 1 cup cheddar cheese (reduced-fat, grated)

Instructions:
Remove seeds, core, and membrane from bell peppers then slice each one into 6 vertical pieces where they dip down. Set sliced bell peppers aside.
Cook ground turkey over medium-high heat, breaking up as it cooks. Cook until the turkey loses its pink color and is cooked through. Drain off any fat then add your Protein Drink Mix.
Preheat oven to 190 degrees Celsius.
Combine cooked turkey with spices and salsa. Evenly distribute mixture into the bell pepper boats, top with cheese and Roasted Soya Beans.
Bake on a parchment lined baking sheet for 10 minutes or until cheese is melted and peppers are hot. Optional ingredients: sliced Jalapeno peppers, diced avocado, fat-free Greek yogurt or sour cream, or sliced green onion.

Serves 6-8

Hold on, you know you don't want to start your day without having breakfast. Let's make a Protein Vegetable Frittata, quickly!

Ingredients:

🥚1 tbsp (14 g) Gourmet Tomato Soup
🥚 2 tbsp (28 g) Protein Drink Mix (You may use PDM Vegan)
🥚 4 large eggs
🥚 1/2 tsp. salt
🥚 1 medium tomato chopped (about 1/2 cup chopped)
🥚 1/2 green bell pepper about 1/2 cup chopped
🥚 1 tbsp fresh chives finely chopped (or 1 teaspoon dried chives)
🥚 1/2 cup cheddar cheese shredded

Instructions:

Preheat oven to 200°C. Spray a large pan with cooking spray and set aside.
In a bowl whisk the Gourmet Tomato Soup, PDM, eggs and salt, then add in the chopped vegetables and chives and 1/4 cup of the cheddar cheese and whisk to combine. Pour into prepared pan and sprinkle remaining 1/4 cup cheddar cheese on top.
Bake for 15 minutes, then remove from oven and allow to cool for 5 minutes, then slice and serve.

Serves 4
