Meet Stephanie

Stephanie is a curious and energetic lover of knowledge who seeks to inspire her students with the same passion for learning. Having matriculated as one of top three of her grade, she went on to move from Johannesburg to Cape Town to study mechanical engineering at UCT.

She loves her academic studies but also takes any opportunity to learn in everyday life. Stephanie believes that everyone can excel in their studies, given the right help. She believes in catering to individual struggles and backgrounds in tutoring, which is made easier through her empathetic and patient nature.

During her free time, she is an avid reader of science fiction and fantasy and is passionate about photography. If not reading or taking pictures, she can be found socialising with friends and family, on a hike or or simply sitting with some music and enjoying a good view.

🏆Student of the Month🏆: Laila

This month, we’re celebrating Laila - not just for the progress she’s making in Maths, but for the incredible consistency, honesty and determination she brings to her learning.

Her tutor, Chiamaka says:

“She has to be the most dedicated and consistent student I've seen yet. She might not be the best in the room academically, but she's always doing her work, asking for more, asking when she's unsure and keeping up to date with her content. She's also very honest about where she's at in terms of knowledge or memory.

As a result she has been making steady progress, uphill, and I foresee her really thriving in Maths.”

Laila is a great reminder that progress isn't always about getting everything right straight away. It's about showing up, asking questions, putting in the work and being willing to keep learning.

We’re so proud of the progress you’re making, Laila. Keep going - you’re building something that will last!

Meet Janis

Qualified Journalist, Tutor and Environmental Educator.

Janis is a mother of two teenage boys and loves to boost children to find their hidden potential.

She has been tutoring on and off since 2004 when she worked in environmental education. She is first and foremost a writer, having qualified in 1989 at Rhodes University with her BA in Journalism and English. She decided to do her master’s in environmental education in 2002, which she could use in her writing and tutoring.

In 2018, she did her level 4 certificate in Early Child Development followed by a Kids’ Yoga Course and a certificate course in Peer Recovery Wellness Coaching. Janis loves nature, children, languages and being active outdoors. She has pursued careers in journalism, website writing, copywriting, tutoring, and environmental education. She currently writes blogs, tutors English online to foreign second language speakers and volunteers at a township school teaching about nature and kids’ yoga.

Janis would much rather be outdoors hiking all day if she could and has two boys who are in grades 9 and 12 at Fish Hoek High.

How to build a revision timetable that actually gets followed.

A student makes a beautiful colour-coded grid on Sunday, feels organised, and abandons it within days. The problem usually isn't discipline, it's the design.

Here's how to build one that actually gets followed:

Start with the time you actually have. Block out school, travel, sport and downtime first, then build revision around what's left. A modest plan you follow beats an ambitious one you abandon.

Keep sessions SPECIFIC. "Study maths" is a wish. "Practise quadratic equations for 40 minutes" is a plan.

Put the hard things first. We all drift towards revising what we already know because it feels good, but the marks are in the topics you've been avoiding.

Make it active. Reading through notes teaches you almost nothing. Fill your slots with doing: past papers, practice questions, testing yourself.

Leave slack. Build in a catch-up slot each week, so one missed session is just moved, not the end of the plan.

And let the student build it, not the parent. A timetable someone else made gets quietly resisted. One a student owns gets followed.

The thread through all of it is honesty. Build the plan around the real student and their real week. Modest and consistent beats ambitious and abandoned, every time.

Struggling to get started? It's something we work on with students all the time, not just the subject, but the how of studying.

Meet Jack

Third-Year BSc in Physics and Astrophysics (UCT)

Jack Brand is a patient, sociable and ever-inquisitive student of science. Having matriculated with a 93% average, he went on to study at the University of Cape Town, where he made the Dean’s Merit List in his second year of study. He is no stranger to personal struggles with academics, and believes that hard work fuels understanding, which is crucial for academic success. To this end, he aims to provide the intellectual care and support needed for students to love learning new things. He is particularly well equipped to tutor Science and Mathematics, but is very proficient in English and Afrikaans. He loves to compose music, write poetry, cook food, and go hiking or running in his spare time.

Meet Alistair Bapoo
Retired Principal and Senior Phase English Teacher

"To teach is to touch a life" has always been Alistair's philosophy on education.

He's taught English at high school level for 36 years, preparing learners for the Senior Certificate examination and being a Senior Marker for all three papers written for English. Since he is aware of what examiners look for when assessing examination scripts, he uses this experience to inform his teaching practice and ensure that students are adequately prepared for tests and exams.

He is friendly and approachable and loves assisting students to achieve their best in English. In his spare time Alistair enjoys reading, going to the theatre, gardening, cooking and spending time with his grandchildren.

We asked our tutor, Chiamaka, what the best piece of academic advice she’s ever received is.

Her answer? Don’t leave it until the last minute.

It might sound obvious, but giving yourself enough time to prepare can make a huge difference. Don’t wait until the night before an exam, or start studying just two hours before the paper. Plan ahead, start early, and give yourself enough time to identify where you’re struggling and get the help you need.

A little preparation now can mean a lot less stress later.

Need some extra academic support? We're here to help.

How Peer Tutoring Can Help

Pairing students of different abilities can benefit both learners. The stronger student reinforces their own understanding by teaching, while the other receives more personalised support. It can also improve motivation, confidence, peer relationships and social development.

I experienced this first-hand through “reading buddies” in Grades 4 and 5, when we were paired with younger students to read stories and help them develop their skills. As someone who loved reading but struggled socially, this gave me confidence and allowed me to connect with others through something I enjoyed. The younger students also benefited from the individual attention they received.

Later, I experienced the same thing in mathematics. After being placed in a higher-level maths class, I often helped classmates who were struggling. Teaching others strengthened my own understanding while also building my confidence and helping me become more comfortable socially.

Although my lessons are usually small and intensive, making it difficult to incorporate peer learning regularly, I strongly encourage students to study together outside of class. While independent study certainly has its place, working in pairs or groups can provide valuable academic, social and personal benefits for many learners.
