This year’s Youth Day commemorates 50 years since the Soweto Uprising, a pivotal moment in South Africa’s history that highlighted the fight for accessible and equal education.
Thousands of students took a stand against forced language teaching and were met with police brutality. The tragic shooting of 12-year-old Hector Pieterson became an enduring symbol of the uprising, which quickly spread across the country and helped shape the future of our nation.
As we remember the courage and sacrifice of the youth of 1976, we reaffirm our commitment to inclusivity, social justice, compassion, equity, excellence, accountability, respect, and ubuntu.
We envision a future where every person has access to quality education in a safe, welcoming, and supportive environment.
