PART 2 OF 3: THE BUILD

The St Helena WR-1060 project began in 2024, when St Helena Government returned to Gemini nine years after we delivered two fully customised WR-850 Rescue Craft to the island.

The new brief was ambitious: a rescue-spec cabin developed from the ground up, with a long list of operational requirements and no compromise on performance.

What followed was more than a year of concepts, detailed drawings, design reviews and specification changes involving the end user, surveyor and marine organisations. By April 2025, the final quotation had been submitted after five revisions to the specification and design.

On 9 December 2025, the official PO was received, and the project was signed off.

Then the build moved into production.

From the vacuum-infused Deep-V hull and seven-compartment Hypalon tube system to the custom A-frame, towing arrangements and the structure designed to carry two VIKING 50-person life raft, every stage had to bring the original brief off the page and into the boat.

By August 2026, the custom WR-1060 GEMINI SAR Cabin was complete and moved through full QC and sea trials ahead of handover.

From first concept to completed rescue craft, this was a truly custom project built around the operational requirements of one of the world's most remote inhabited islands.

PART 1 OF 3: FROM BRIEF TO BLUEPRINT.

Nine years after Gemini delivered two customised WR850 rescue craft to St Helena, the St Helena Government came back with a new challenge: develop a purpose-built WR1060 SAR Cabin for one of the world’s most remote inhabited islands.

This was never going to be a standard boat with rescue equipment added afterwards. The way St Helena Rescue Services operate had to shape the design from the beginning.

The rear of the boat needed to accommodate two Viking 50-man life rafts and dedicated towing equipment. The cabin had to incorporate shock mitigation suspension seating, navigation and communications systems, crew protection and storage.

The specification also called for a manual righting system, engine protection and a long list of rescue and safety equipment, all while maintaining the performance expected from the WR1060 platform.

So, before anything reached the factory floor, there were renders, drawings, design reviews and a lot of decisions about how every element of this boat needed to work together.

This is where the two year project began.

This is where handling stops being a spec on a page.
