Today, Tel Aviv will march with pride.
Rainbow flags will fill the streets. People will celebrate openly, love openly, protest openly and be seen openly.
But just beyond Israel’s borders, the reality for LGBTQ+ people is very different.
Across much of the Middle East, LGBTQ+ people still face criminalisation, persecution, imprisonment, violence and in some places, even the possibility of death. For many, living openly is not an option. Safety can depend entirely on which country you were born in, which border you live behind and whether your identity is protected or punished.
That is the contrast this post is about.
Israel is not perfect. No democracy is. There is still more work to do, more rights to protect and more equality to fight for. But in this region, Israel stands apart.
It is a place where Pride is public.
Where LGBTQ+ people can serve, organize, protest, build families, love openly and demand change.
Where activists can push the courts, challenge the government and continue expanding rights.
That matters.
Because Pride is not just a parade.
It is visibility.
It is resilience.
It is freedom.
And in a region where too many LGBTQ+ people are forced into silence, visibility is an act of courage.

WIZO Cape Town Shiri members and their families were proudly amongst the crowd supporting “Batman” as he ran the Cape Town Marathon in honour of the Bibas boys.
The Shiri Branch was named in memory of Shiri Bibas, mother to Ariel Bibas and Kfir Bibas, who were all tragically kidnapped and murdered in Gaza.
WIZO Cape Town is a proud to support Israel

What an inspiring morning at WIZO Cape Town’s 123rd AGM - you could truly feel the energy in the room!
We were honoured to welcome two incredible guest speakers. Joshua Schewitz, Director of the South African Zionist Federation - Cape Council, delivered a thought-provoking address on the importance of creating space for new leaders to step forward and shape the future. We were also deeply moved by Dani Bitton, who shared her powerful personal story and voice with us - captivating the room and reminding us all of the strength, resilience, and spirit of WIZO women.
We were also proud to introduce our newly appointed Executive for 2026, alongside an exciting group of emerging young leaders stepping into key roles within WIZO Cape Town:
Jodi Abrahams, Rotem Morag-Bousso, Maxine Boyd, Moonyeen Castle, Janene Currie, Kim Daitsh, Felicity Isserow, Elanit Judes, Or Lahat, Esta Levitas, Suzanne Luck, Kelly Melnik, Donné Querido, Gill Raphael, Linda Saban, Elana Sandler, Lauren Shewitz, Natasha Yakobi, and Hila Zetler.
This marks an important and exciting step forward for WIZO Cape Town - strengthening leadership, ensuring meaningful succession, and bringing fresh energy, ideas, and passion into the future of our organisation.
Here’s to building, growing, and continuing to make an impact together.
