Why does the PechaKucha format make it so enjoyable to watch?

Perhaps it’s because you never quite know what’s coming next.
On 22 October, nine very different people will step onto the PechaKucha stage. Each has just 20 images and 6 minutes 40 seconds to tell their story.

And then the next person gets up and takes you somewhere completely different.

That’s part of what makes being in a PechaKucha audience such fun. One speaker can have you laughing, another can make you see something you’ve never thought about before, and another can catch you completely off guard and leave you surprisingly moved.
And just when you think you know what kind of evening you’re having, the next speaker appears.

There are no long presentations to sit through. No endless slides. No one gets to dominate the evening. Every speaker has exactly the same 400 seconds.

It still amazes us how much can happen in that time. Six minutes and 40 seconds can make you laugh, make you cry, teach you something, challenge an assumption or introduce you to a world you knew nothing about.
That’s PechaKucha.

And perhaps the best part is that you get to experience it nine times in one evening.

𝗪𝗵𝘆 𝟮𝟬 × 𝟮𝟬?

If you’ve never been to a PechaKucha before, the format is wonderfully simple.

Every speaker has **20 images**, and each one stays on screen for exactly **20 seconds** before automatically moving to the next. The speaker doesn’t control the slides, so there is no opportunity to pause, go back or spend a little longer explaining something.

After 20 slides, their time is up.

That means every PechaKucha talk lasts exactly **6 minutes and 40 seconds**.

The format was created in Tokyo in 2003 by architects Astrid Klein and Mark Dytham, who wanted an alternative to long, drawn-out presentations. Twenty images for twenty seconds each kept presentations visual, focused and moving.

It sounds easy, but those 20 seconds come around remarkably quickly. Speakers have to know their story, trust their images and keep going when the next one appears.

And somehow, in just 400 seconds, a really good story can take you a very long way.

At **PechaKucha Cape Town #70**, speakers will each have those same 400 seconds to tell their story.

**Lost is a place too.**

A venue with stories in its walls

When you come to PechaKucha Cape Town, you’re stepping into a building that has been part of the city’s story for well over a century.

The Homecoming Centre is made up of five interconnected buildings, including nineteenth and early twentieth-century warehouses and the remains of an old Gothic-style Congregational Church hall. For many years, the complex was associated with Sacks Futeran, a textile and soft-goods supplier familiar to generations of seamstresses and tailors from District Six. Homecoming Centre

The District Six Museum acquired the property in 2002, creating a space connected to memory, return and community. Later, part of the complex became the Fugard Theatre, which opened in 2010 and became one of Cape Town’s much-loved performance spaces. After the Fugard closed, the building returned to the District Six Museum and reopened as the Homecoming Centre. The Fugard Theatre

Even the theatre names carry history. The Star Theatre, where PechaKucha takes place, and the Avalon Auditorium are named after historic District Six bioscopes. The Fugard Theatre

There is something rather fitting about gathering here to listen to ten Cape Town voices tell their stories.

On Thursday 22 October, we return to the Star Theatre for PechaKucha Cape Town #70, Lost is a Place Too.
Come from 18:30 for drinks and snacks from Cooktastic.
Talks begin at 19:00 sharp.

It started in Tokyo. Then something rather wonderful happened.

Back in 2003, architects Astrid Klein and Mark Dytham created a simple new way of telling a story: 20 images, each on screen for just 20 seconds.

That is 6 minutes and 40 seconds. No long presentations. No endless slides. Just a person, a story and the images that help them tell it.

The first PechaKucha Nights took place in Tokyo. Then the idea began to travel.

One city became another. People gathered to share stories, ideas, experiences and things they cared about. More than 20 years later, PechaKucha has spread to more than 1,200 cities around the world.

And one of those cities is Cape Town.

On Thursday 22 October, PechaKucha Cape Town returns for PechaKucha Night #70: Lost is a Place Too.

Ten Cape Town voices. Ten completely different stories. You never quite know where a PechaKucha evening is going to take you, and that is part of the fun.
Come early, grab something to eat from Cooktastic, find a seat and settle in for an evening of stories you probably would not hear anywhere else.
