The iThemba Laboratory for Accelerator-Based Sciences is a multi-disciplinary research facility that is based on the development, operation and use of particle accelerators & related research equipment. The facilities provide opportunities for modern research, advanced education, the treatment of cancers and the production of unique radioisotopes. Our company's primary focus is on providing scientifically and medically useful radiation through the acceleration of charged particles using the Separated Sector Cyclotron, the Van der Graaff Accelerator and other appropriate technologies. iThemba LABS aims to be the primary centre of expertise in radiation medicine and nuclear science and technologies to advance the knowledge and health of the people of Africa.

Prof. Jessica Dempsey, the Director General of the SKAO, visited us earlier today. It was amazing to see the excitement on her face when she joined Ms Pontsho Maruping, Acting DCEO for national research infrastructure platforms at the NRF on a guided tour. Prof. Jess took up her position in June 2026, and the visit created an opportunity to see the future organizational home of Radio Astronomy. Construction work on phase 1, the science processing center, has begun, and it is scheduled for completion in February 2027. Mseki Primary School receives 2nd prize at the Annual Science Competition hosted by MCED. Excitement filled the air as learners from 21 schools (5 HS and 16 PS) gathered at Bridgeville Primary School to showcase their understanding of science concepts through exciting demonstrations. The competition offers an opportunity for learners to gain scientific knowledge whilst developing presentation, problem-solving, and critical-thinking skills. "I'm amazed to see what these young scientists were able to do in such a short period of time," said Mr Ambrose Yaga, the manager of Science Engagement at NRF-iThemba LABS. Mr Yaga served as a mentor to the group as they prepared for the competition. We are grateful to Mr Francois Jones, the subject advisor for natural science and technology at MCED, for his dedication in creating opportunities beyond the classroom.
