♻️🌱 Small steps, big impact!

Our recycling bins were delivered to school today, and we are super thrilled! 🎉 A huge thank you to the Prescient Foundation for sponsoring these bins and supporting our school’s commitment to creating a cleaner, greener environment.

Keeping our environment clean is everyone’s responsibility, and we’re excited to teach our learners that every small action can make a difference. 🌍💚

Here’s to building a culture of recycling, responsibility and caring for our planet!

📚✨ BOOKS, CREATIVITY & A WHOLE LOT OF IMAGINATION! ✨📚

What happens when you put books, creativity and imagination together? You get an unforgettable Book Week at Westlake Primary School! ❤️📖

Last week, our school came alive with stories!

✍️ Our learners became authors!
Sue Heese — who wears many hats, including being an author — showed our learners how to turn their creative writing pieces into their very own books.

🎤 Stories came alive!
Heather Bailey from Principal’s Academy treated all our Foundation Phase learners to beautiful read-aloud sessions on our stage, reminding us just how magical a good story can be.

🎨 Our doors became works of art!
Teachers and learners transformed their classroom doors into creative book-themed displays.

🎭 And the characters came to life!
Our learners dressed up as their favourite book characters, bringing their favourite stories right into our school!

📚 And our bookshelves got a little fuller!
Thank you to Principal’s Academy and two wonderful students from Reddam Constantia for donating books to our school. Your generosity will allow many more of our learners to discover new stories and new worlds.

At Westlake, we want our learners to know that reading isn't just about schoolwork — reading is about joy, imagination, adventure and possibility.

📚✨ Celebrating Books, Literacy & the Joy of Reading! ✨📚

What a special way to celebrate Book Week and Literacy Day at Westlake!

We were incredibly privileged to welcome Professor Carole Bloch, co-founder of Nal’ibali, author and passionate literacy advocate, who spent time with our Foundation Phase teachers sharing her knowledge, experience and passion for reading for enjoyment.

Carole challenged and inspired us to think about how we create a culture where children don’t simply learn to read, but where they choose to read, enjoy stories and see themselves as readers. 📖❤️

The session gave our teachers an opportunity to reflect on our internal literacy practices and explore practical ways to bring more stories, books, conversation and enjoyment into our classrooms. Because when children experience the joy of a good story, we are not only developing readers, we are nurturing imagination, curiosity, confidence, language and a lifelong love of learning.

As a school, we are committed to strengthening our literacy practices and creating rich opportunities for every child to engage with books and language. We know that a love of reading can open worlds, build possibilities and change lives. 🌍📚

A heartfelt thank you to Professor Carole Bloch for generously sharing her time, expertise and passion with our teachers. What a privilege to learn from someone who has dedicated so much of her life to putting books and stories into the hands of children. 💛

Here’s to a week filled with stories, imagination, discovery and the joy of getting lost in a good book!

Every week, Christiane Beretta Savoia and Cynthia Hutchinson give their time, creativity and passion to guide our young artists and create a space where imagination can flourish. 🖌️🌈

We are so grateful for this amazing partnership. They show up week after week, simply to make a difference in the lives of our children — inspiring them to create, explore, express themselves and believe in their own creativity.

Thank you for investing your time and talents in our learners and for bringing a little more colour, joy and possibility into their week. 💛🎨

Our Grade 1 teachers hosted a wonderful Parent Engagement Workshop on Jolly Phonics! 💚

The session gave parents valuable insight into how we teach phonics at school and shared practical ways they can support their children’s reading, pronunciation and early literacy development at home.

At Westlake Primary School, we believe that when teachers and parents work together, our learners thrive! 🌟

A big thank you to our Grade 1 teachers and all the parents who joined us and made the engagement such a success. 👏🏽

The Westlake Eco-Warriors hard at work! 🌱

Our Eco-Warriors have been getting their hands dirty—clearing and planning an indigenous garden, learning how to use cuttings, plant seeds and protect our precious soil. 🌿🌱

They also put their compass skills to work, designing and beginning to create a site compass and sundial. 🧭☀️

What an incredible team! Learning, creating, working together and caring for our environment. 💚 Well done, Eco-Warriors! 🌍👏

It takes a village to raise a child and our village just got bigger!

🌍💧 Proud of our Eco-Champions! 💧🌍

From March to June, our learners took part in the "Save a Fishie" Schools Eco Challenge, learning about pollution, waste reduction, recycling, water conservation, and protecting our natural ecosystems.

They put that learning into action through community clean-ups, recycling drives, and cleaning up the vlei right here in Westlake! 🌿🐟

We may not have won, but we are so proud of our learners for their hard work and commitment to a cleaner, greener community. 💚

We will continue to champion environmental awareness and do our part to take care of our environment.

Well done, Eco-Champions — you make us proud! 👏
