A common perception of homeschooling is that it shelters children. That as parents we’ve narrowed down their worldview, deliberately or not, to something that sits inside our own little walls. Socially isolated, these home-bound children will fall further and further behind on the social development required to interact with people out in the world.

They are, judging by the way they’re spoken about, actually suffering quite severely. Their chances of becoming functioning adults contributing to society seem all but dashed.

If you share this concern, know that you’re far from alone. But also know that it’s a myth.

I want to ask you a favour:

Stop picturing home educated kids spending their lives at home.

Stop picturing them inside the four walls of a house, day in and day out, never stepping into the sunlight.

Instead, start picturing them at the library, a skate park, a swimming pool, an art gallery, a street market, at the beach, at the park, exploring a museum.

Picture them interacting with all the different people in all those different spaces - librarians, skaters, lifeguards, gallery curators, market stall owners, surfers, park rangers, museum staff...one on one, often, about things that specifically interest them at a pace they set.

Picture them in a karate dojo, a gymnastics hall, a dance class, a music or drama school. Picture the interactions they’re having in those spaces with children passionate about the same stuff they are.

Picture the varied ages, backgrounds, cultures and world-views of all those people they’re engaging with throughout the week, and the natural environments in which that’s happening.

No, home educated children aren’t sheltered from the world. And today, we end that myth.

“How will you make sure your homeschooled children aren’t falling behind?”

I really struggled with that question in our early days. I spent hours checking the level my kids should be at across their core academic subjects, either sweating on them catching up or celebrating them being ahead.

But over time a small internal voice started asking for my attention. It had a point to make:

The concept of falling behind only exists if you’re trying to arrive at a specific place within a specific period of time. Childhood doesn’t have to be a race. It can be a journey instead, with many paths and endings and many different measures of progress and success.

I paused, thinking about my two older children.

The first, an avid reader, writer and artist. Not a square inch of his bedroom clear of his own illustrations. Inhaling books as if they give him life. A beautiful writer with a voracious appetite for creating his own work. Matching and exceeding academic standards in his sleep. A delight to every teacher he ever had.

The second, his younger brother by just two years, almost the opposite. Unable to spend the time needed at a desk to meet any standard that requires it. Always needing to move, to make noise, to express himself physically. Learning by doing, tinkering, exploring, experimenting. By breaking and fixing, by trial and error. Testing enough boundaries to cause tense parent-teacher meetings while he was at school.

The voice, far from finished yet, pointed out that I was trying to benchmark two very different children against one very specific standard. That one of them would always tick the expected boxes while the other would always struggle. That perhaps my son wasn’t the problem, the standard I was holding him to was.

The penny dropped.

What started as a quiet internal voice soon became my strongest conviction: it’s impossible to fall behind when your only goal is to become the truest version of *you*.

I love this and will keep reminding myself about this daily as I enter my classroom filled with hopes and dreams and beautiful minds.

“No school today, kids?”

“Nope, we’re homeschoolers! This lake is our school today!”

“Oh...but...you will still spend time learning, won’t you?”

We’re living in a strange time. A time where learning, even now, is directly associated with a small space inside four walls. With pens and worksheets and textbooks and calculators and blackboards and desks and uniforms and structure and routines and bells and expectations and tests and grades.

A time where all this isn’t just considered a good learning option for some children, but the gold standard for all.

Really think about that for a second. A small classroom with a group of children gathered by age, and an often outnumbered, overwhelmed and overworked teacher delivering a prescribed set of topics to them at a prescribed pace. A tight set of standards, measures, deadlines and accountability governing them all. A specific, narrow definition of success, one that only fits the natural traits of some of the children, being taught early and reinforced often. A place where the pressure to perform and the fear of failing chip away at a child’s mental strength almost daily. A place many, many children and teenagers slump their shoulders on the way to, and celebrate even the smallest break from.

How long will we hold onto the belief that this is the best possible environment for discovering and absorbing what we need to know about the world we live in?

Back at the lake, exploring the raw landscape together, stopping to talk to people of all ages and from different walks of life, pushing ourselves physically, breathing the crisp air deeply, we reflected.

None of what we were surrounded by matched the accepted definition of an ideal learning space. None of it looked like what learning was supposed to look like. None of it looked like ‘getting a good education’.

As we sat down, watching the children pull snacks from their pack and start pouring over a map together, it was clear they still had a lot to learn from today’s classroom.

That good education, then, would just have to wait.

19/11/2020

So sad.....I need to keep reminding myself that I started this Cottage School so children can be who they are not what we want them to be or become. Parents sometimes also force us into the wrong direction and make us loose our focus. Because this world is all about measuring up and not falling behind.

The three young teenagers sat at their desks, waiting.

The first was deep in his imagination. In his mind he was turning shapes into creatures, the way he does on a page, filling them with colour and character and pulling them into a story. He was a creative, artistic child, always imagining and dreaming and scribbling and drawing.

The second was running her fingers back and forward across her left knee, head tilted back, eyes closed. She could hear the notes of the piano keys as she tapped, her right foot rising and falling on an imaginary pedal. She was a musical child, always composing and playing and singing and listening.

The third was staring intently at the corner of her desk. At the way the curved metal leg had been attached to the wooden top, the rivet fitting neatly into the small dent that had been made just for it. She was a practical, tactile child, always breaking and dismantling and fixing and building.

The voice of an adult broke the spell. “Ok, pay attention please. You have been learning how to solve quadratic equations. Today we will measure your ability to do so independently.”

The adult walked past their desks, placing a sheet of paper face down on each, before returning to the front of the room.

“You have 30 minutes to complete the test. Please begin.”

They turned their paper over, a series of equations swimming into view as they shook off their thoughts of telling stories and writing music and constructing things. If only, they all thought desperately as they picked up their pencils, they’d been able to shut all that out during the lessons in the weeks prior. Perhaps then the page sitting in front of them wouldn’t seem so scary. The equations so alien. The concept of solving them so impossible.

Scanning down the page, the most important lesson of the day was clear:

There was no place for daydreaming here.
