A British-Brazilian woman, Gayara, begins investigating her family history and discovers there are no written records beyond her grandmother. Rather than treating this absence as the end of her search, she uses it as the starting point for an imaginative journey into the lives of the women who came before her.
Gayara is a fictionalised version of playwright and performer Gaël Le Cornec, drawing on Latin American traditions of autofiction and speculative fiction. Her personal search opens onto a wider question: how do women of colour construct a sense of identity when the histories they inherit have been fragmented, suppressed or erased?
The play moves between Gayara’s contemporary life in London and key moments in Brazilian history, connecting her personal search to the wider histories of Indigenous and Black communities whose knowledge and relationship with the Amazon have been central to its survival.
The Amazon itself becomes a character and a living presence within the work. The destruction of the rainforest is placed alongside the erasure of human histories, creating a connection between environmental and cultural loss. Amazons asks what it means to inherit a damaged world, while also celebrating the resilience and knowledge of those who have protected it.
A visually and sonically rich solo performance, Amazons combines live camera, projection, sound, music, storytelling and physical theatre.
