SHE ASKS: HOW CAN WE BUILD IT BETTER? ⚙️

From ventilation and fire services to wet services, engineering is about more than understanding how things work. It’s about finding ways to make them work better.

Zena Stain holds a Bachelor of Engineering in Mechatronic Engineering and works as a Design Engineer in the building services industry, turning technical challenges into practical solutions.

Her work is a reminder that engineering is where curiosity meets creativity, problem-solving and purpose.

This Women’s Month, we’re celebrating women who look at the world around them and ask: How can we build it better?

An outstanding showing at the Western Cape Debating Provincial Competition held at UCT! 🎤

Our Senior Team debated their way to the Provincial Final, finishing as runners-up after an incredibly close 4-3 split decision. Congratulations as well to Ayanda Bordiss, who was named the second-best speaker in the province. 🌟

Our Junior Team, competing in their first-ever Provincial Competition, also impressed with a remarkable performance, finishing 13th overall. This outstanding result is a testament to both their hard work and the bright future of Herschel debating.

Congratulations to all our debaters for representing Herschel with confidence, eloquence and determination. We are incredibly proud of you!

SHE ASKS: WHAT IF? 🔭✨

What if the questions we ask today could help us understand the universe tomorrow?

Herschel alumna Charlotte Louw (2018) has taken her curiosity far beyond the classroom. A former Dux Scholar and Gates Cambridge Scholar, Charlotte is now pursuing research in cosmology, exploring some of the biggest questions surrounding gravity, dark energy and the universe we call home.

From asking big questions at Herschel to exploring the mysteries of the cosmos, Charlotte reminds us that curiosity can take you anywhere.

This Women’s Month, we’re celebrating women who ask bold questions, challenge what we know and help shape what comes next.

Because limitless possibilities begin with a question: What if? 💫

Our Subject Heads in Mathematics and Physical Sciences had an inspiring evening at Parklands College with the STEM Society students! 🚀

The group was captivated by NASA astronaut Dorothy Metcalf-Lindenburger, who shared her journey from high school science teacher to flying aboard the Space Shuttle Discovery and leading missions to the International Space Station. Her talk focused on three pillars: Curiosity, Courage, and Challenge — truly motivating!

Congratulations to Zoë Rightford on an exceptional achievement in the South African Mathematics Olympiad!

Zoë was the only Herschel girl to progress to the prestigious third and final round of the Olympiad—an outstanding accomplishment. From a record 95 000 students who entered the first round, only the top 200 high school students (approximately 100 juniors and 100 seniors) advanced to the final round.

Congratulations, Zoë! We are incredibly proud of your perseverance and mathematical excellence.
