We’re thrilled to share that Mirage Blue (2024), a collaborative film by contemporary artist and CTCA lecturer Rowan Smith and filmmaker Wendy Fredriksson, has been selected for screening at the 4th International Experimental Film Festival in Athens this October!🇬🇷

Bringing together film, sculpture, sound and performance, Mirage Blue unfolds within a mysterious, dreamlike world where intimacy, memory and time become entangled through an enigmatic board game.
The international festival programme spans five continents, presenting experimental films that grapple with the complexity of our time—from climate catastrophe, artificial intelligence and q***r identities to migration, memory, trauma and social resistance.

🎉We did it again: 19 Loeries nominations for Cape Town Creative Academy! 🎉

The Loeries, one of the most prestigious creative awards across Africa and the Middle East, celebrates excellence, innovation and relevance in brand communication.

This year, our students impressed the judges with work that challenges conventions, sparks imagination and helps redefine the future of design. Earning a nomination is already an extraordinary achievement, and we could not be prouder to see 19 CTCA entries recognised across multiple categories!

What a fascinating two days welcoming the Metaverse Academy XR Summit to the CTCA campus!✨🤩

Jointly hosted by CXI-Africa and the Vaal University of Technology (VUT), the summit brought together industry professionals, tertiary institutions, designers and software developers to exchange insights, innovations and practical applications across the evolving landscape of Extended Reality (XR).

The Metaverse Academy unites 13 partners from Europe, Africa and beyond, combining expertise in higher education, vocational education and training (VET), innovation, entrepreneurship and industry.

We were proud to present our projection-mapping project and demonstrate how CTCA integrates emerging technologies into its teaching while continuing to bridge the gap between academia and industry.

Thank you to all the delegates for the insightful conversations, and a special thank you to our lecturers, Lodi Inga and Philip van der Walt, for representing CTCA and sharing their work.

This is what happens when a strong designer knows exactly how to use new tools.✨

Third-year Interaction Design student Chanté Le Roux created a complete smart air-travel experience designed to remove the friction, stress and inefficiencies of commercial flight.

Across an eight-week brief, she developed the concept, branding, spatial experience, user journeys, interface system and Figma prototypes as one connected IoT-driven ecosystem.

Then she pushed the presentation further.
Using AI image generation, Chanté visualised her storyboarded environments. With video generation, she created movement between scenes. In After Effects, she composited her Figma prototype recordings into the final sequence to make the entire experience feel tangible, believable and alive.

The important part? The idea, design decisions, visual language, interactions and system thinking are hers.
AI didn’t do the designing. It helped an ambitious designer communicate her work at a scale that would otherwise demand a production crew, locations and a far bigger budget.

This is the kind of AI practice we want to see at CTCA: intentional, inventive and in service of excellent design.

Experimental. Collaborative. Unforgettable.✨📸🌌

Our students spent three nights beneath the legendary dark skies of the Cederberg, guided by Syd Strydom, an artist and educator with over twenty years of experience in digital and analogue photography.

Working hands-on with professional camera equipment, students learnt advanced astrophotography techniques from Sony Ambassador Mike Eloff and created striking portfolio work in one of South Africa’s most spectacular landscapes.

A huge thank you to Sony for making this extraordinary learning experience possible.
