What a privilege to be invited to the opening of the 2026 Matric Workshop Exhibition, Homeward Bound, at Zeitz MOCAA on Saturday, 27 June.✨👏

It was lovely to meet the young artists and hear them speak with such passion about their work. We also bumped into alumni from previous years, many of whom we are proud to now call our students!

Now in its fifth year, the Zeitz MOCAA Matric Workshop is run annually by the BMW Centre for Art Education and brings together a select group of Grade 12 Visual Art learners from different schools for three months of collective learning, experimentation and creative development.

Each year, the Matric Workshop responds to an exhibition at Zeitz MOCAA. This year’s workshop was inspired by A Protea Is Not a Flower, an intergenerational exhibition exploring themes of exile, displacement, identity, connection and isolation across multiple generations, countries and continents.

Homeward Bound brings together 18 exhibiting students whose work reflects thoughtfully on place, memory, identity and belonging. Well done to all the students. Your work was inspiring, considered and deeply moving.🥺

Don’t miss this beautiful exhibition!

From rock pools to relief tiles!✨🌊

Last Friday, learners embarked on a creative journey that began at the Two Oceans Aquarium, where they explored the incredible biodiversity of South Africa’s rocky shores. Through careful observation and discovery, they gathered inspiration before heading to Cape Town Creative Academy to bring their ideas to life in clay.
The result? Beautiful tactile relief tiles that tell the stories of marine creatures through texture, pattern and touch.

Creatures & Creators is a collaboration between the Western Cape Education Department (WCED), the Two Oceans Aquarium Foundation and Cape Town Creative Academy, combining design, science and accessibility in one inspiring learning experience.

These artworks will soon be exhibited at the Two Oceans Aquarium alongside interpretive text in print and Braille, creating an experience that can be enjoyed through multiple senses.

A heartfelt thank you to Artsource for generously sponsoring all the materials that made this project possible, for guiding learners through the clay demonstration, and for expertly firing each of the completed tiles. Your support, knowledge and generosity helped bring this creative experience to life. 💙
