Sailing has given us some wonderfully reliable phrases:

"We'll only be out for an hour."

"The forecast looks fine."

"I know exactly where I put it."

"We can definitely carry that kite."

And, of course:

"One more race."

It's nice that after all these years we still believe ourselves.

Thinking about a new sail doesn't mean you need to become a sailmaking expert first.

You don't need to arrive at the loft knowing exactly which material or construction you want.

Tell us about your sailing instead.

Do you race? Cruise? Sail short-handed? What conditions do you normally see? What works well with your current setup? What would you change if you could?

That's useful information.

The technical recommendations can come afterwards.

A good sail starts with a good conversation.

Modern sailmaking gives us some incredible tools.

But walk through any good loft and you'll still see something technology can't replace: experience.

Knowing which detail deserves another look. Recognising wear before it becomes a problem. Understanding how something that looks small on the loft floor will behave once it's loaded on the water.

That judgement comes from years of building, repairing and sailing.

The tools have changed. The value of knowing your craft hasn't.

That’s a HMYC - Henley Midmar Yacht Club, Midmar Cup win for Hayden, Howard and Tim! 🏆⛵

With Sunday’s racing cancelled, Saturday’s results stood, putting Ullman Sails South Africa ambassador Hayden Miller, together with Howard Leoto and Timothy Weaving , at the top of the fleet aboard Puffin.

Representing Royal Natal Yacht Club , the team put together a seriously consistent day on the water, with a race win and four top-two finishes to secure the Midmar Cup.

It’s been especially good to follow this one from the loft, from handing over their new Ullman sails before the event to seeing them out on the water and bringing home the trophy.

Huge congratulations to Hayden, Howard and Tim, and well done to everyone who took part in another great Midmar Cup at Henley Midmar Yacht Club.

Not a bad first outing for the new sails. 👀
