NEW MATHS CLASS FOR VENDORS’ CHILDREN

We are proud to have extended our offering to our vendors’ children by starting a Saturday maths class.

The classes have been running since March, and aim to improve mathematics grades, cement the concepts learned at school, and assist the children with preparing for exams. And because we know that it takes a lot of practice to see grades improve, we’ve ensured that these classes give the children room to do just that.

The pupils will be tutored by a highly experienced maths tutor, helping them overcome their challenges for a subject that has reportedly been difficult for many of our vendors’ children.

At the Big Issue, we are no strangers to the fact that education is key when it comes to breaking the poverty cycle. We are currently offering these classes to children in grades 10 and 11, and are looking to increase our capacity to assist more children.

Diana Ferrus awarded Doctorate degree (honoris causa)

Diana Ferrus was born on 29 August 1953 in Worcester. She is a well-known South African writer, poet and storyteller of mixed Khoisan and slave ancestry. Her work is published in Afrikaans and English.

Ferrus is best known for her poem about Sarah Baartman, a South African woman taken to Europe under false pretenses and paraded as a curiosity. She wrote the poem in 1998 while studying at Utrecht University.

The popularity of this poem is widely believed to be responsible for the return of Bartmann's remains to South Africa. The poem was even published into a French law.

Ferrus is a founder of the Afrikaans Skrywersvereniging (ASV), Bush Poets, and Women in Xchains. She has a publishing company called Diana Ferrus Publishers and has co-edited and published a collection of stories about fathers and daughters.

She was also one of the recipients of the Freedom of the Town-award during the Worcester Bi-centennial celebrations in 2020.

Why Am I Hated So Much?

Change your perspective 😊

26/09/2021

*What do you think…???*

“We fall in love with 3 people in our lifetime. Each one for a specific reason.

First Love:
This love often happens at a young age. You eventually grow apart or call it quits over silly things. When you get older you may look back and think it was not love. But the truth is, it was. It was love for what you knew love to be.

Remember: There are different depths of love.

Second Love:
The hard one. You get hurt in this one. This love teaches us lessons and makes us stronger. This love includes great pain, lies, betrayal, abuse, drama, and damage. But this is the one where we grow. We realize what we love about love and what we don’t love about love.

Now, we know the differences between good and bad humans. Now, we become closed, careful, cautious, and considerate. We know exactly what we want and don’t want.

Third Love:
This one comes blindly. No warning. It creeps on you silently. You don’t go looking for this love. It comes to you. You can put up any wall you want, it will be broken down. You’ll find yourself caring about that person without trying. They look nothing like your usual crush types, but you get lost in their eyes daily. You see beauty in their imperfections. You hide nothing from them. You want marriage and family with them. You thank the universe for them. You truly love them.”

General information

Westridge High was the first high school in Mitchell’s Plain to open in January, 1977 with Mr. Peter Petersen as the first principal, and six other staff members. The first assembly is held for 240 learners from all over Cape Town in grades 8 and 9.By the end of 1977, the enrolment has increased to 380. The first matric class of 26 learners matriculate at the end of 1979, with only one failure.

By the end of 1979, the school enrolment has increased to 1347. In 1981 matriculant, Joshua Human, becomes the first learner from Mitchell’s Plain to pass with an “A” aggregate and features in the top ten. In 1983, Westridge High becomes the first school in Mitchell’s Plain to participate in the “A” section of the athletics competition and finishes second behind Belgravia High. The school also caps a memorable year with its first full variety concert with much success and acclaim. In 1984, six prefab classrooms are added to accommodate the increased student enrolment. In 1985 the school is caught up in the widespread school protests, and soon becomes a prime venue for student protest rallies with the police always present. In 1987, Westridge High becomes the first school in Mitchell’s Plain, and only the 5th school overall, to win the “A” section athletics competition at the Athlone Stadium, bringing to an end Belgravia High’s 10 year domination. This achievement co-incides with the school’s 10th anniversary celebrations.

In 1993 several educators take severance packages and leave the profession. Mr. Petersen retires as principal and is succeeded by Mr. Lennie Paulse. Mrs. Barbara Samaai becomes the third principal of the school after Mr. Paulse in 1996. In 2001, the Khanya Schools Project installs computers in the school for the specific use by Mathematics and Science learners.

In 2005, Westridge High and Agnieten College in Zwolle, Holland, establish a partnership with a view to exchanging information of common interest and forging ties via e-mail. In 2007 we celebrate our 30th anniversary with various events. We started by having a thanksgiving service with 1300 people in attendance. In 2010, the school hall was built.

In 2012, Mrs. B. Samaai hands over the reins to our current principal, Mrs. W. Vergotine.
