It's World Tourism Day, and no passport or boarding pass is required to visit your local wetland, Intaka Island.

Our 16-hectare protected wetland at the heart of Century City, is home to more than 120 bird species and a stretch of protected indigenous fynbos, right in the middle of one of Cape Town's busiest urban nodes.

Walk the trail, spot a few birds from one of the hides, or take our boat through over 8km of canals that flow through the neighbourhood.

It's one of Cape Town's best things to do for a weekend outing, a birding trip, or a family day out, no flight needed.

Entry from R37 for adults and just R23 for kids and pensioners.

We're open 7 days a week from 7:30 to 17:30, changing to 19:00 from 1 October.

Calling all young explorers! Get ready to celebrate the arrival of spring at Intaka Island this school holiday. As the days get warmer and nature bursts back into life, we’re inviting young adventurers to discover the sights, sounds and surprises of spring across the wetlands.

Our rangers (and Captain Feathers) have hit the road!

We kicked off this year’s Rangers On The Road programme with a visit to Springdale Primary School in Mitchells Plain, bringing environmental education directly to learners in their school.

Every week, schools from across the city and province visit Intaka Island to engage with its educational offerings. However, for many no-fee schools, the cost of such trips remains a barrier. To address this, the “Intaka Island Rangers on the Road” initiative was launched, bringing Intaka’s educational experience directly to these schools.

Through an interactive session focused on sustainability and waste recycling, learners had the opportunity to explore how everyday choices can help protect our environment and natural heritage.

As a next step after the roadshow, these learners are invited to visit Intaka Island and physically engage in our educational programmes. Thanks to generous sponsors, several schools have already been able to make this trip, though transport costs remain a major challenge.

The goal is to have all learners visit Intaka Island and immerse themselves in its educational programmes, exploring the Island and enjoying a boat ride.

Sponsorships cover transport, lunch, a guided tour, educational lessons, and a boat ride.

Who said learning can't grow on trees?

Today, the Grade 4 learners of Soyisile Primary traded the classroom for the great outdoors as they explored Intaka Island.

As part of their Arbor Week experience, the learners learned about the importance of trees, how they help our environment, and what each of us can do to care for the natural world around us. For these learners from a no-fee school, it was a chance to learn, explore and connect with nature beyond the classroom.

To take their Arbor Week lesson home, every learner received a free spekboom to plant and care for. Because Arbor Week is about more than planting trees - it’s about helping young minds understand the role trees play in creating a healthier, greener future.

This Arbor Week, we’re growing knowledge and nurturing young environmental champions, one spekboom at a time.
