A very special sighting at Intaka Island! The African Spoonbill (Platalea alba) was spotted taking its time foraging for snacks.

The African Spoonbill prefers large, quiet, shallow waterbodies where it forages by swinging its head from side-to-side, slicing its bill through the water, searching for small fish and aquatic invertebrates. It is mostly nomadic, wandering in response to local rainfall.

Come visit us! You will always spot something amazing here.

Intaka Island is open 7 days a week from 7:30 to 17:30
(May to September) + 7:30 to 19:00 (October to April).

The Painted Reed Frog (Hyperolius marmoratus) is an introduced (extra-limital) species in the Western Cape. The species is native to much of eastern and northeastern South Africa, but is not naturally indigenous to the southwestern Cape where it has become established.

It’s thought to have arrived accidentally via the horticultural trade in the late 1990’s and has since become a familiar sight in many local wetlands, including Intaka Island - a reminder of how our natural landscapes continue to change over time.
