Our Story

The Mary Kihn School is a school for Deaf and hearing impaired learners. We offer schooling from grade 0 up until 18 year old skills, using either Spoken English for oral learners or South African Sign Language for the Deaf. We offer a Differentiated CAPS Curriculum, as well as a Skills Curriculum. Our Skills Curriculum offers subjects such as Agriculture, Hairdressing, Nails and Beauty, Arts and Crafts, Hospitality, Motor Mechanics, and Welding. We offer these skills from 13 years old with the hope that by the age of 18 the learner will be ready to be incorporated into the job market or become an entrepreneur.

The Mary Kihn School networks with other NGOs and institutions for further enrichment of life skills for our learners. For example, we offer a golf program. We also offer Audiology and Speech Therapy services.

History:

The Mary Kihn School was named after Mary Kihn. She was Mary Gilchrist and was married in 1934. She was a teacher of the Deaf from Scotland and came by boat to South Africa. In 1932 the South African National Council for the Deaf approached the Cape Education Department to start classes for hearing impaired learners at Mowbray Public School with Mary as the teacher. On 3 August 1933 the first class of 7 hard of hearing children was started.
