This textbook is conceptualized and developed by the Including Disability in Education in Africa (IDEA) research unit at the University of Cape Town in collaboration with the Digital Open Textbooks for Development (DOT4D) initiative in the Centre for Innovation in Learning and Teaching at UCT, this innovative textbook aims to boost teachers' confidence in mainstream and special schools, enabling them to effectively engage with learners with disabilities in the classroom and address their diverse learning needs. It is intended to serve as a valuable resource for learners, teachers and teacher educators. Importantly, the textbook is free, openly licensed for reuse and translation, and links the reader to multiple other useful open resources.

Today we launched the LEGO Braille Bricks Project!! This project aims to facilitate, through play, braille learning with children with visual impairment. We would like to extend our sincere gratitude to our partners The LEGO Foundation, SA and the schools involved in this project.

Dr Richard Vergunst from IDEA attended the REMO COST Action Researcher Mental Health Training School in Paris from 22-25 May where researchers from all across Europe gathered to discuss psychosocial disabilities/mental health in academia and how we can most effectively address this growing concern. A great supporting network was achieved with potential future collaborations.

IDEA were part of a Lego Braille Bricks Training Workshop from 17-19 May with potential to become part of the pilot LEGO Braille Bricks Programme in South Africa. This programme aims to facilitate, through play, braille learning with children with visual impairment.

Yesterday IDEA participated in a workshop hosted by SASUF on ‘Student Co-creation in Open Education’. SASUF is the South Africa – Sweden University Forum and IDEA is involved as part of DOT4D and has been working with colleagues at the University of Western Cape, Gothenburg University and University of West in Sweden. Our collaborative (mostly research-focused work) takes place under the auspices of the ‘Open Education and Social Justice’ sub-project. In yesterdays’ workshop we profiled the ‘Science is Tough’ and ‘Disability Studies in Inclusive Education’ textbook initiatives as examples of innovative work happening at UCT
