In July 2026, I had the opportunity to travel to the United States as part of the Youth Africa Ambassadors Exchange Program, following my nomination by the U.S. Consulate. I travelled alongside young leaders from across Africa, where we engaged with youth organisations, government officials and communities in Washington, D.C., New York and beyond. The purpose of the trip was to learn about leadership, civic engagement and youth participation while building meaningful connections with other young people. It was an incredible opportunity to bring what I learned back home and use it to make a positive difference in my community. - Triston Fortune

Our Grade 10 and 11 Revision Schools were a huge success last year, with a record number of learners benefiting from the focused revision and exam coaching which took place. Learners from many different schools in Cape Town attended since the courses are not restricted to BHS learners.
This year, the Grade 10 & 11 Revision Schools will take place on the first 4 Saturdays of Term 4, viz. 10, 17, 24 & 31 October.
The revision sessions will focus on coaching for the exams and will give learners the study notes and knowledge to approach their final exams with confidence. It is useful for those who are struggling, as well as those who are aiming for A’s!
These coaching sessions are especially important for those in Grade 11 who will need to use their Grade 11 final results when they apply to tertiary institutions next year.
The courses fill up very fast so don't delay! Bergvliet High Takes the Cup at the 16th Annual Jamie Tindill TournamentBy Andrew Howard
On August 3rd, Bergvliet High School had the honour of competing in the final round of the 16th annual Jamie Tindill Chess Tournament, a prestigious event hosted by Wynberg Boys’ High School. The tournament pays tribute to the memory of Wynberg’s Jamie Tindill, a talented WP Chess player who tragically passed away before his matric year. This year’s competition was exceptionally fierce, featuring top teams from Bishops Diocesan College, Rondebosch Boys’ High School, Heathfield High School, and Bergvliet High School.
The Path to the FinalsIn a hard-fought semi-final match, Bergvliet managed to edge out a narrow victory against Bishops. The excitement spilled over into the parallel semi-final between Rondebosch and Heathfield; after a tense draw, Rondebosch advanced to the final on tie-breakers.This set up a thrilling final showdown: Bergvliet vs. Rondebosch. With neither school having ever won the Jamie Tindill trophy, the pressure was immense and both sides were eager to prove their mettle.
Down, But Not OutThe boards were set, clocks were started, and the target was set: 8.5 points needed for victory.Despite a brilliant qualifying round where he scored a perfect 6/6, Conor Hercules (Board 4) fell short in his final game. The setback continued as Jayda Voges (Board 6), who also boasted a flawless record from day one, and Caylah Diedericks (Board 3) lost their matches, leaving Bergvliet trailing 0–7.Undeterred, Bergvliet began to fight back. Matthew Graham (Board 5) delivered a decisive win to get Bergvliet on the board, reigniting the team's momentum.
A Climax to RememberIt then came down to Bergvliet’s co-captains, Malesela Moja (Board 1) and Rodrique Sanders (Board 2), to pull off a miracle and secure the remaining 7 points. It is rare to describe a chess match as heart-stopping, but both players put on an unforgettable performance. Malesela dominated his match to earn 4 crucial points. Then, with only seconds remaining on his clock, Rodrique clutched the final 3 points, sealing a dramatic 9–7 comeback victory for Bergvliet High.
A Historic TriumphBeyond taking home the trophy, three Bergvliet players earned individual Board Prizes for their outstanding tournament performances:• Malesela Moja (Board 1)• Matthew Graham (Board 5)• Jayda Voges (Board 6)
This victory marks Bergvliet High School’s very first Jamie Tindill Tournament title. It has been a privilege to accompany these exceptional learners and share their journey. Bergvliet truly has some rising stars in the world of chess.
