The social media have recently been abuzz with various untoward behaviours of spectators, players and coaches at schoolboy sport matches. With our oldest, most contested and most valued derby just a few days away, it may be pertinent to remind us all of the Honour Code adopted by both Bishops and Rondebosch in 2019, when there was concern about over zealousness entering the competitions between the schools. School sport is special. The rivalry between our schools is built upon the neighbourliness of two close communities which should engender pride and respect. Sport is supposed to be fun. It builds character. It evokes passion. It creates camaraderie. It instils values. And it develops friendships that last for lifetimes.
As pupils, parents, old boys and officials, we should honour the longstanding and worthy values that underpin school sport. We should strive to embody those values both for ourselves and those who follow us.
Shaun Simpson,
Headmaster
