Quote from Adv. Bongani Christopher Majola in his 2019 article "The Cycle of the Menstrual Burden," highlighting the lack of dignity in failing to provide women and girls with proper sanitary products;
"The lack of menstrual hygiene products inflicts indignity upon millions of women and girls. They continue to experience a menstrual cycle with no clean materials to manage the period in a dignified manner. There is no dignity without basic necessities such as sanitary napkins. This perpetuates a culture of silence that forces many to cope in isolation."

In 2014, WASH United initiated International Menstrual Hygiene Day in an effort to eliminate the taboo in discussing menstruation. Now, we continue to use it as a day to spread awareness and stress the importance of access to feminine hygiene products.

Girls in South Africa routinely miss five days of school per MONTH due to a lack of access to feminine hygiene products. Providing free pads and tampons to female students can keep them in school.

Roughly 2.1 million girls, between the ages of 12 and 18 years that are living below the poverty line in South Africa, need to resort to using old clothes, rags, newspapers, leaves, bark and grass because they cannot afford feminine hygiene products. As a result, these girls can be absent for up to 60 days per school year.
By providing free menstrual pads to girls, we could reduce that number to zero by keeping girls in school, and sharing this post with the hashtag.
