Why has liberalism not worked out in Africa the way it did in Europe? Liberal values like democracy, individual rights and free markets may seem universal – but, as Nigerian philosopher Gabriel Asuquo argues, their roots are distinctly European, drawing on an individualist conception of the self, community and land that cannot be exported wholesale to the African context. It’s an inside job. We can create the necessary and wonderful ecosystems outside: and without the inner ecosystem of healthy, strategic, wise capacity and skills : the outside simply becomes a monument to what is possible or to our deepest failures of attention and grace.
