This speaks to how race and gender intersect to make black men vulnerable to harm - great piece! http://www.thoughtleader.co.za/gillianschutte/2013/03/05/lynching-black-men/

Lynching black men | Thought Leader On March 1 we watched in disbelief and horror as a young Mozambican man, Mido Macia, was forcibly handcuffed to the back of a police van and dragged behind the vehicle as he cried out for them to stop. When the car eventually arrived at the police station eyewitnesses say he was further beaten by th...

Looking forward to tomorrows class where Kharnita Mohamed will be telling us about her research into how blind men do masculinity. How do you get to be 'one of the boy's' if you can't choose the right clothes, follow the same sports etc? What are the strategies used by men who can't see?

From SWEAT and Sisonke:

Stop harassing us - Tackle real crime!

Dear Supporter of s*x workers’ rights

We would love for you to join us as we commemorate International S*x Worker Rights Day, on the7th of March 2012, under the theme ‘Stop harassing us - Tackle real crime!’.

We will be marching to 5 police stations across the country (in Cape Town, Johannesburg, Durban, Thohoyandou and East London- details below), demanding an end to the violence s*x workers experience at the hands of the police.

We are calling for the decriminalization of s*x work because the current law forces us to live in fear of police who harass and abuse s*x workers with impunity. We are being arrested and our rights are being violated for doing work that supports our families.

The memorandum of grievances we will be handing over to the Station commander in provincial police station will demand that police stop:
- publically humiliating s*x workers (e.g. taking us to public spaces, and forcing us to shout out that we are s*x workers)
- targeting, and profiling s*x workers in degrading manners (e.g. asking us to take off of our clothes in order to ‘identify’, and photograph us)
- asking for s*xual favors in exchange for not being arrested
- harassing, and unlawfully arresting us
- Detaining us in and inhumane conditions (e.g. keeping us in filthy cells, giving us dirty blankets, not allowing us to bath, and denying us food)
- beating, and ra**ng us in detention
- refusing HIV-positive detainees access to their treatment
- searching us and using the condoms we have on us (because we observe safer s*x practices) as proof that we are breaking the law

We will be wearing masks not because we are ashamed of the work that we do, but because we are forced to hide as s*x workers out of fear of harassment and violence. These, along with t-shirts, will be provided for, and every marcher is expected to wear them in unity. And if you have a red umbrella please bring it with (a red umbrella is an international symbol for s*x worker activism).
We look forward to having you there. Viva s*x workers’ rights! Viva!

Yours faithfully
Kholi Buthelezi, Sisonke National Coordinator

If Pistorius Is Telling the Truth, He’s a Dangerous Killer 27/02/2013

How does this relate to the theorising on masculinities we've been covering in class?

If Pistorius Is Telling the Truth, He’s a Dangerous Killer You can also listen to William Saletan read this piece. The trial of Oscar Pistorius won’t begin for months. But from what he has told us, we already know he’s a reckless, dangerous killer. On Feb. 14, around 3 a.m., Pistorius was in bed at his house with his girlfriend, Reeva...
