Next year, the Community Health Intervention Programme (CHIPs) will proudly mark its 30th anniversary, a milestone made possible by the unwavering dedication of our incredible volunteers. Over the past three decades, countless community members have been trained and empowered to keep the spirit of CHIPs alive, embodying the vision of “by the community, for the community.”
On Saturday, June 6th, CHIPs continued this legacy by welcoming 10 new community volunteers to the OptiFit training. Each new leader stepping into this role reflects a shared passion for doing more and for building on the foundation that has become a second family for many participants in the OptiFit program within their communities.
We deeply appreciate every individual who has chosen to serve, to lead, and to inspire. Your commitment sustains our mission and fosters healthier, more resilient communities. We are excited to watch these new leaders flourish in their roles, carrying forward the torch of community-driven health and wellness. Mobility, flexibility, warming up, stretching, and cooling down are essential for adults to stay active and independent, and to reduce the risk of injury. Gentle movement and stretching help improve balance, joint function, and overall strength, while proper warm-ups and cool downs prepare the body for exercise and support recovery afterwards.
On Saturday, 23 May, the Community Health Intervention Program hosted its Optifit Outreach leadership for a refresher workshop. Biokineticist Demi Pretorius did an excellent job empowering our leaders with the knowledge and skills needed to better care for our members while facilitating their weekly exercise classes. Well done to everyone who attended. On Saturday, April 11th, the Community Health Intervention Programme welcomed the Silvertown OptiFit branch to SSISA. It was a powerful display of community in action, a space where individuals came together not just to exercise, but to uplift one another and strengthen the bonds that make lasting change possible.
Guided by instructors Demi Pretorius and Gemma Hoskins, the session pulsed with energy, encouragement, and shared purpose. Their leadership set the tone, but it was the group's collective spirit that truly defined the day. Every movement carried more than physical effort; it carried connection, accountability, and a sense of belonging.
Each exercise became a building block, not only for stronger bodies, but for a stronger, more united community. In those moments of effort and encouragement, participants reminded one another that progress is not a solitary journey. It is something we build together through support, resilience, and showing up for each other.
The Silvertown OptiFit branch brought more than enthusiasm; they brought a sense of togetherness that transformed the space. They showed that community is not just about where you come from, but what you create when you stand side by side with others who share your vision.
Because in the end, fitness is not only about health, it is about connection. It is about people choosing, again and again, to rise together, to push forward together, and to believe not only in themselves, but in each other. On Saturday, March 28th, the Community Health Intervention Programme welcomed the Delft OptiFit branch for a gym session at SSISA. What happened was more than just a workout. It was a strong reminder of what can happen when people come together with a shared purpose: to move, to grow, and to become better versions of themselves. Instructors Cole Knecht and Thutukani Masondo led the session. It was filled with energy, encouragement, and positivity. Their enthusiasm was contagious.
Each exercise became an opportunity to build strength, confidence, and community. Moments like these show that fitness is not only about physical health. It is also about connection, motivation, and resilience. Every step taken, every rep completed, and every smile shared reflects progress that goes beyond the gym floor. The Delft OptiFit branch brought an incredible spirit to the session. They proved that just showing up is already a victory. With the right mindset and support, everyone has the potential to achieve more than they thought possible. Keep moving, keep showing up, and keep believing. Every effort counts. We're grateful to the Insights Foundation for facilitating a transformative workshop for our OptiFit Outreach leadership team. As we embarked on 2026, the Community Health Intervention Programme kicked off the year with remarkable energy and purpose, thanks in large part to this enriching experience.
On Saturday, February 7th, our leaders engaged in a powerful session that provided profound insights into their leadership styles and how to effectively manage and connect with others. Through the engaging exploration of the four color personalities, Earth Green, Sunshine Yellow, Fiery Red, and Cool Blue, we uncovered new layers of self-awareness and empathy. The morning was filled with laughter, discovery, and meaningful learning, fostering a stronger understanding of ourselves and how we show up as leaders.
We are especially thankful to our facilitators, Leshna Poonan and Dunnielia Tshabala, whose warmth, expertise, and genuine connection with the team made this workshop one of the most memorable experiences ever. Their guidance not only enriched our understanding but also inspired us to lead with greater compassion and insight.
This workshop has truly set a powerful tone for our journey ahead, and we extend our heartfelt appreciation to the Insights Foundation for making this possible. Your support has empowered our leaders to lead with clarity, confidence, and a deeper understanding of the people they serve. Celebrating a Year of Service: OptiFit Outreach Leaders Breakfast 2025
On Saturday, December 6th, the Southern Sun Hotel in Newlands was filled with warmth, gratitude, and inspiring stories as we gathered for the OptiFit Outreach Leaders Breakfast. It was a special morning dedicated to reflecting on a truly remarkable year of service, community impact, and the unwavering volunteer spirit that drives us all.
As we looked back on 2025, we celebrated the countless lives touched through our dedicated efforts. We took a moment to honor the incredible leaders who have given so much of themselves over the years. Fabian and Nicky Collins, after 12 years of dedicated service to Kuils River OptiFit, retired with our heartfelt appreciation. Linda Phele was recognized for her 23 years of unwavering commitment to Silvertown, a true pillar of her community. Elsies River OptiFit marked a proud milestone of 25 years, and Delft OptiFit celebrated its 21st year of service. We also honored Veronica Plaatjies for her extraordinary 27 years of service, reminding us all of the lasting impact one person can have.
This gathering was more than just a celebration; it was a testament to the power of community and the importance of volunteerism. Volunteers are not paid because they are worthless, but because they are priceless. Their dedication, passion, and selfless giving are the true currency of change.
As we look ahead, let this morning’s celebration inspire us to continue building stronger communities, uplifting others, and embodying the spirit of service. Together, we are making a difference—one life at a time.
Here’s to another year of impact and community building. Thank you to all our leaders and volunteers for your priceless contribution.
