In ‘East of Eden’ John Steinbeck wrote, “And now that you don’t have to be perfect, you can be good.” He was exploring the paralyzing impossibility of human perfection versus the wisdom and freedom of messy, beautiful, imperfect humanity. He concluded that demanding perfection from ourselves and others often leads to rigid expectations, a lack of mercy and kindness, harsh judgmentalism, and shattering disillusionment, while accepting humanity with all of its quirks and flaws and foibles opens the door to understanding, acceptance, compassion, respect, and a widening of our capacity to see goodness in ourselves and others. Applied to parenting that means that we can relax, mamas and daddies. We don’t have to be perfect parents to be good parents. We can be loved and love just as we are. And so can our children. The Aim of the Teen Boards is to teach the child quantity,names and symbols for numbers 11-19 and to learn the sequence of Teen numbers. This prepares the mathematical mind and prepares the the child for writing numerals from 11-19.

As South Africa celebrates national arbor week from the 1st September and as we approach spring, we are discussing some of our country's most significant and oldest trees🌴, and learning about the changes associated with spring🌻🌞🐝.

Yesterday we took advantage of this opportunity to green our environment by planting a few succulents 🌵 and flowers🌸 .

*Pink Picture and The Movable Alphabet*. The movable alphabet is a large box with compartments containing letters of the alphabet, vowels are in blue and consonants in red .It is found on the Language shelf in a Montessori classroom.

The montessori broad stair is a set of ten brown rectangular prisms 20cm in length that vary in width and height by 1cm,found on the Sensorial shelf in a Montessori classroom.

We are so proud of this little boy who mastered colour box 2. We now move on to colour box 3 in shaa Allah🤗

Colour box 1&2 is a Montessori activity found on the sensorial shelf in a Montessori classroom. The aim is to develop discrimination of different colours and learn their names. It heightens their perception of colour in the environment and refines the chromatic sense.

The montessori cards and counters is a box with a set symbols 1-10 and a total of 55 counters, found on the maths shelf in a Montessori classroom.

The aim of the activity is to reinforce number sequence;relate symbols to quantity and to introduce the child to the concept of odd and even.

This prepares the mathematical mind for linear and skip counting.

Today for International Mother Earth day🌱 we learnt all about the life cycle of the bean plant and learners will be observing the life cycle of their very own bean plant,in the upcoming weeks.😁

Life is big and hard and scary sometimes. Even for us as adults.

We don’t always know what ‘the next right thing’ is. We don’t always know what to say or how to act or even how to sort out our own jumbled thoughts and emotions at times.

Those unsettled feelings can make us anxious or prickly or timid or grumpy or teary or short-tempered or sad or overwhelmed or scared or withdrawn.

Our children are no different. They are just as human as we are. Their feelings are just as valid as ours. Their experiences are just as valid as ours. And their reactions are just as valid as ours.

As adults we have to keep in mind that our children’s perceptions of their feelings and experiences may be very different from ours because they don’t have the maturity and wisdom to see and feel and remember things with our adult judgement or perspective.

Something that may mean little to us may have a powerful impact on our children. Something that may trigger huge feelings in us may have little to no impact on our children. Projecting our feelings and reactions onto our children can lead us to minimize their big feelings or unload our own big feelings onto them or even trigger big feelings in them ourselves.

Recognizing that our children are individuals, dependent on us but distinct from us, helps us to see them and hear them and understand them, to see things from their perspective, and to meet their needs right where they are instead of where we think they should be.

Trust is tapestry woven day in and day out with threads of loving and listening and helping and encouraging and supporting and guiding. It’s threaded throughout with mistakes and misunderstandings and missteps and mended with hugs and apologies and “I love you’s.” It’s washed and worn to velveteen softeness with years of tears and laughter. And it’s wrapped around our children’s hearts to keep them warm and safe when life feels too big and hard and scary to handle alone.
