Sad occasions to bring together old colleagues….. a trip down a 30-40 year memory lane

17/11/2023

I, like so many, was left speechless when I heard about the passing of Mr Lewin because we were still reeling from the shock of the passing of Mr Daniëls. So many thoughts and memories raced through my mind. But the one that stood out was the realization that Mr Lewin was the quintessential “STEENBERGER”.

There is no doubt that Mr Lewin had a profound impact on colleagues, acquaintances, former students AND children of former students. The community that this beloved husband, father and grandpa served with distinction is filled with love and appreciation. We had in Mr Lewin a stellar Accountancy teacher, class teacher, rugby coach, Telematics co-ordinator, Governing Body School Fee Exemption Officer and a fundraising co-ordinator par excellence. We know that all Steenbergers are in unison with us when we express our heartfelt gratitude to Mrs Lewin and the family for unselfishly sharing him with us.

Mr Lewin, who left for the private sector after spending some time at Steenberg High School, was welcomed with open arms upon his return. We were really overjoyed because Accountancy teachers were a rare breed at the time. As such, he became the personification of “Once a Steenberger…ALWAYS a Steenberger!”.

He just had to make sure that every cent was accounted for and that a profit had indeed been generated. Elke funksie waar hy betrokke was, was met sukses bekroon en ek glo enige skool sou so ‘n gemotiveerde personeellid in hul span wou hȇ. Hence, I’m proud to say that he was our MR Fundraiser!

Mr Lewin had to negotiate with parents and often endured their wrath because he was a tough negotiator. He endured the undue criticism because no else wanted to perform the duty! BUT, he persevered because the financial viability of the school was of paramount importance to him. It’s for this very reason that we could manage the school effectively and offer our children more than the ordinary. I can honestly state that nothing comes to mind that Mr Lewin ever declined to assist with or execute.

On a personal note, I wish to share with you that Mr Lewin tutored my daughter in 2008. She wanted to drop Accountancy because she was not coping. I thought when I approached him that he would decline because one is usually exhausted following a day of teaching over-crowded classes. We were really pleased when he availed himself unconditionally. I vividly remember how he restored her self-confidence to continue with Accountancy… but I also had the opportunity to witness his flair in explaining Accountancy concepts and principles that my daughter struggled with. He undoubtedly inspired her to keep her dream alive by sacrificing his valuable family time and sharing his knowledge…this I will always hold dear.

As humans, we tend to hold on to wonderful memories and Mr Lewin will surely be part of our best memories. He touched our hearts in a very special way that we cannot accurately or fully explain.

Mr Lewin has been a phenomenal teacher, loyal colleague, loving friend, caring mentor, exceptional organiser and a meticulous administrator with a beautiful smile and a great sense of humour…a legend and a team player who has always done more than what has been required and who has given more than his all, until the very end!

I wish Mrs Lewin and the family peace, comfort and courage and extend my heartfelt condolences to you, the family, colleagues and friends of Mr F. Lewin…a stalwart and a timeless icon whose legacy will not fade with the passage of time.

Rest in peace

Mnr Daniëls was oortuig dat “A child (involved) in sport is a child out of court”.

I vividly recall the incident where a parent of one of our learners pursued a matter with Mr Daniëls. Yet, when the same parent whose child enrolled at a different school, approached him to coach her in long distance running, he happily and unconditionally agreed. This simply underscored his love for children and the desire to be of service to the community. He was indeed in a class of his own!

Mr Daniëls established himself as a respected professional who conducted himself with dignity and authority. He rendered an impeccable service to the school community and this endeared him to his colleagues, the parents and learners. He was an outspoken critic where discipline was lacking. Yet, he has proven himself to be a teacher with a pleasant and caring nature. His integrity was beyond reproach and he could be trusted to act with honour and sincerity in all circumstances.

He was truly the embodiment of a “STEENBERGER”…someone who gave his best, who gave his all and who gave unconditionally…
We salute you Sir, Colleague, Coach and Friend
Rest in peace
