Lindsay Butler, 22 July 1953 - 5 August 2026. Wynberg Boys' High School Head Prefect 1972. Lindsay's classmate and old friend, Steve White, writes:

"In paying tribute to Lindsay, I cannot do better than paraphrase the words of his sister, Heather, or in Lindsay’s own words when remembering his late brother, Dougie.

Heather writes “Lindsay was the middle of three children and seemed to excel at everything.”

Lindsay was the Head Prefect of our 1972 matric year. He also captained the 2nd Rugby team, played cricket and water polo, as well as playing the bugle and piano. Above all, he was a helluva nice guy who was respected for just being Lindsay.

Lindsay said of Dougie: “Douglas was known to never have a negative thought about his fellow human beings,” and we all knew Lindsay to be the same.

Lindsay died on the 5th of August after a 3-year-long battle with cancer.

Rest easy, my friend."

The Wynberg Old Boys' Union extends sincere condolences to Lindsay's wife Nicky and family, his sister Heather and family, and the family of the late Douglas Butler.

We pause today on the Hawthornden to remember and honour Old Boy Bibo Makwedini, taken too soon. Aden da Costa, Bibo's friend & teammate, and WBHS Head Prefect 2024 writes:

Some time into Grade 11, hearing that a well-known rugby player would be joining our school, there was naturally a sense of excitement, even a bit of nervousness among the rugby guys. However, that first 6 am gym session when Bibo walked in and we had our first chat, I immediately knew this place would soon become his home. What started as a few gym sessions and a couple of rugby practices with a fast-becoming familiar face soon became seeing one another every day for hours on repeat, and ultimately what built a rugby relationship and friendship that few would understand.

Bibo was known as someone who was the best guy to have in your corner on the good days, and an even better one to have on your bad days. Someone who was brutally honest, which made me trust him with everything. He took on the challenge of a new environment head-on, as he always did with anything, and completely bought into what Wynberg Boys' High School is. The way Bibo conducted himself, the values he had, and the way Bibs lived his life - he was a true Wynberg man.

On the field, the only way to describe a person like him is Special. Special in the way he led, through calculated words and through his actions, and Special in the things he did; the way he would play went against any sort of front row stereotype, just expressing his presence. He was one of the smartest guys you would ever meet when it comes to anything rugby, and the gritty moments on the field with the expert debriefs after are something I'll miss forever.

Bibo is a friend I thought would be by my side till the very end; losing him so soon seems impossible. Anyone who knew Bibs well knows that to have had him close was a blessing. The love he gave, the energy he passed, and the fun times had will always be remembered by those of us lucky enough to have fitted into his short journey.

I love you, Bibs; we all love you.

Rest in Peace, Old Boy, Old Friend

Well-deserved recognition for Old Boy Matt de Villiers, Matric 2018 👏👏👏 A superb season; here's to many more!

With deep sadness, we learnt of the passing of proud Wynberg Old Boy, Graeme Rogers, Matric 1960. Our thoughts and prayers are with Graeme's family and friends at this most difficult time. A memorial service will be held on Monday, 3 August at the Helderberg Manor Retirement Village Clubhouse. Rest in Peace, Old Boy.

Wednesday, 1 July 2026: Today we mark 185 years since Headmaster John McNaughton opened the doors of our Wynberg Boys' Schools in Glebe Cottage on Waterloo Green. From a single-room schoolhouse to the sprawling campuses of Wynberg Boys' High School & Wynberg Boys' Junior School, we celebrate the vision, leadership, and Supera Moras spirit that continues to drive excellence in academics, culture, sports and service. Yesterday, today, tomorrow, brothers in an endless chain. Happy birthday, Wynberg!

Another great gathering of the monthly 'Pat Simons Lunch' group at False Bay Rugby-Club! Fantastic to have the legendary Ronnie van Rosenveld, Head Prefect 1950, regale us with Wynberg stories of 3/4 of a century ago as we approach our Wynberg Boys' High School and Wynberg Boys' Junior School celebration of our shared 185th founding on 1 July.
