HERITAGE DAY

Heritage Day, celebrated on September 26, 2023 at Zwaanswyk High School, was a significant and enriching experience for our learners. This day allowed students to connect with their roots and celebrate the diversity of their heritage and culture. The activity of creating posters was an excellent way for learners to express their unique backgrounds and share their stories with their peers. Heritage Day holds immense importance as it fosters a sense of pride and belonging among learners. It encourages them to appreciate their cultural heritage, understand the rich tapestry of traditions, and respect the various backgrounds that make up our community. By celebrating Heritage Day, we promote tolerance, unity, and cultural exchange, which are crucial for building a harmonious and inclusive society. Furthermore, this celebration provides a valuable educational opportunity. It allows learners to learn about the heritage and customs of their classmates, broadening their horizons and promoting cultural awareness.

Ms. Hannah Jacobs, during her Term 3 teaching practice at our school, embarked on an inspiring Social Entrepreneurship project. She and her team introduced locally sourced cold-pressed orange juice to various Cape Town schools. What sets this project apart is their commitment to giving back to the community. The bulk of their earnings was dedicated to acquiring orange trees, and we're proud to share that Zwaanswyk High School was selected to receive one of these trees. This initiative showcases Ms. Jacobs' exceptional dedication to our institution and her passion for creating a positive impact in the community through innovative and sustainable practices.

Mrs. Frans, the parent of Dominic Frans in Grade 12D, demonstrated exceptional generosity and community spirit by organizing a Sanitary Products drive at her workplace. Her decision to select ZWHS as the beneficiary of this drive reflects a deep commitment to supporting our school and its students.

The contributions from such initiatives can have a profound impact on the well-being and dignity of our students. Access to sanitary products is a fundamental necessity, and Mrs. Fransโ€™s initiative not only addresses this need but also showcases the power of individuals to make a positive difference in the lives of others.

We extend our heartfelt gratitude to Mrs. Frans for her thoughtful and caring gesture. Her actions exemplify the strong sense of community and support that makes ZWHS a special place for our students. We are immensely grateful for her dedication to improving the lives of our students and for choosing our school as the recipient of this essential drive.

Why choose a high school in pursuit of excellence?

High school is a time for teenagers to learn valuable skills for life from professionals (their teachers) and from their peers. Valuable high school days prepare our children for tertiary education and for the world of work. The days at high school are filled with informational activities, engagement with content, assessments that challenge learners, sport and cultural activities that develop the various aspects of an individual and the opportunity to build positive relationships. There are many reasons a high school education is important, but most of all it is a means to achieve long-term goals and nurture a good work ethic, a sense of accomplishment and an opportunity to experience good olโ€™ hard work.

According to Matthew Lynch, an American Education Theorist, the five attributes of a successful school are:

1. Leadership: Learners perform better when the Principal, the Senior Management Team and the School Governing Body provide strong leadership.

2. High Expectations: The second element is having high expectations of learners as well as teachers. High expectations of learners have repeatedly been shown to have a positive impact on performance. Teachers who are expected to teach at high levels of effectiveness can reach the level of expectations.
