SAILI held a workshop for our Matric class of 2022 on Saturday 14th May. It was such a wonderful experience partnering with Janet Labberte of CAREER AVENUES and for her to share her valuable knowledge and experience with our learners. We were lucky to also have Debbie Meyer who travelled all the way from Franschoek to talk about the NSFAS application process. We are so grateful for partners who invest time in helping SAILI grow their students.

18 out of our 21 matrics attended the workshop and we handed out a little gift to remind them of SAILI while they study for their final year in high school🤩

Strange, spiral bee combs look like fantastical crystal palaces. Now we know why.

Some Aussie bees build spiral structure hives. Are they amazing architects, mathematicians or following a simple set of rules? These researchers built drone bees to find out. These Australian bees might be following the same rules that crystals use to grow. 14/07/2020

Moderna's coronavirus vaccine has moved to second phase of testing

Corona Virus has certainly inspired a new level of scientific cooperation and creativity. Here is a vaccine that instructs cells to make the spike protein active in corona virus - basically, you infect yourself. Then your immune system is activated and you heal yourself. In the process you develop immunity to the virus. Cool ha? The Food and Drug administration (FDA) has given approval to biotech company Moderna to begin their next phase of testing on their coronavirus vaccine candidate.

Parent gently and stay safe. This season will pass.

And the people stayed home. And read books, and listened, and rested, and exercised, and made art, and played games, and learned new ways of being, and were still.
And listened more deeply.
Some meditated, some prayed, some danced.
Some met their shadows.
And the people began to think differently.
And the people healed.
And, in the absence of people living in ignorant, dangerous, mindless, and heartless ways, the earth began to heal.
And when the danger passed, and the people joined together again, they grieved their losses, and made new choices, and dreamed new images, and created new ways to live and heal the earth fully, as they had been healed.
Kitty O’Meara

World's smallest dino: A pebble-size amber nugget holds a spectacular prize: what may be the smallest dinosaur ever to live on Earth. This 99-million-year-old amber chunk was found in Myanmar (formerly Burma) and holds the skull of a hummingbird-size dinosaur. This creature, dubbed Oculudentavis khaungraae, is extremely weird; its bulging eyes had lizard-like sockets and about 100 sharp teeth in its beak, indicating it was a predator of teensy prey, likely insects and other invertebrates. Invisible women in science don't have to stay invisible. Read the story, remember her name.

❝Since her death in 1979, the woman who discovered what the universe is made of has not so much as received a memorial plaque. Her newspaper obituaries do not mention her greatest discovery. […] Every high school student knows that Isaac Newton discovered gravity, that Charles Darwin discovered evolution, and that Albert Einstein discovered the relativity of time. But when it comes to the composition of our universe, the textbooks simply say that the most abundant atom in the universe is hydrogen. And no one ever wonders how we know.❞ — Jeremy Knowles, discussing the complete lack of recognition Cecilia Payne gets, even today, for her revolutionary discovery. (via alliterate)

• Cecilia Payne’s mother refused to spend money on her college education, so she won a scholarship to Cambridge.

• Cecilia Payne completed her studies, but Cambridge wouldn’t give her a degree because she was a woman, so she said to heck with that and moved to the United States to work at Harvard.

• Cecilia Payne was the first person ever to earn a Ph.D. in astronomy from Radcliffe College, with what Otto Strauve called “the most brilliant Ph.D. thesis ever written in astronomy.”

• Not only did Cecilia Payne discover what the universe is made of, she also discovered what the sun is made of (Henry Norris Russell, a fellow astronomer, is usually given credit for discovering that the sun’s composition is different from the Earth’s, but he came to his conclusions four years later than Payne — after telling her not to publish).

• Cecilia Payne is the reason we know basically anything about variable stars (stars whose brightness as seen from earth fluctuates). Literally every other study on variable stars is based on her work.

• Cecilia Payne was the first woman to be promoted to full professor from within Harvard, and is often credited with breaking the glass ceiling for women in the Harvard science department and in astronomy, as well as inspiring entire generations of women to take up science.

• Cecilia Payne is awesome and everyone should know her.

Time to boast about our 2019 Matric Class! These wonderful 22 people collected 63 Distinctions and three were in the top 40 for the Western Cape. Our maths average was 69% and physics was 70%. We are so excited to see where the next phase of life takes them! Remember matrics you are tree - the branches are opportunities, sometimes they are big ones, sometimes they aren't but you are always you at the trunk. Keep growing.

Need another chance at matric? SCIMATHUS. This programme offers learners, who have already passed Grade 12 (with an average of at least 60%) but who do not qualify for higher education, a second opportunity to improve their NSC results in specific subjects to enable them to re-apply for university programmes. Preference is given to students from educationally disadvantaged circumstances that prevent them from demonstrating their academic potential to access higher education.

I’m Honestly Fed Up With All The Bad News, So I Illustrated 50 Of The Best Ones From 2019 We are often bombarded with fear-mongering and shocking headlines that make us feel that the world is falling apart. However, while it’s important to report on problems and issues, I believe there is so much good in this world that it needs to be found and promoted just as widely.

Meet the South African who Matriculated with 100% for Maths... at just 15 years old!

Musa Manzi: After passing Matric, I knew I wanted to study at Wits University, so I borrowed R100 from my mom and took the bus to Johannesburg. The people in the admin department said they couldn’t help me because I hadn’t applied. I didn’t know what to do. A guy there saw my confusion and asked if he could help me. He discovered I’d received distinctions for all my Matric subjects at the age of 15, including 100% for maths and 98% for physics, and persuaded the university to register me for a BSc in maths and physics. His assistance blew me away. He was Indian, and where I came from, Indians and white people were in the same bracket for me: unhelpful to black people! It was a lesson I’ve never forgotten in letting go of my prejudices and not judging others.

Meet the South African who Matriculated with 100% for Maths... at just 15 years old! He got 100% for Matric maths at the age of 15 by teaching himself. Then the life of Musa Manzi - now a professor of geophysics at Wits University - turned tragi

Brain scans don't lie: The minds of girls and boys are equal in math

Science finally puts to sleep the old debate about gender and maths ability. We might be different on the outside but on the inside, our brains work the same for maths.

Brain scans don't lie: The minds of girls and boys are equal in math Several studies have already debunked the myth that boys are innately better at math than girls, and new brain images offer more proof.

Our Story

SAILI is passionate about supporting high school performance particularly in Maths and Science and in seeing disadvantaged young people go on to tertiary studies.

SCHOLARSHIPS - We identify, develop and support potential in students and schools by guiding talent into the working parts of the state education system. We ensure that students with potential have a fair chance at fulfilling that potential and going on to tertiary studies. We add quality and competitive edge to high performing schools by referring our gifted scholars to them.

CAREER GUIDANCE - We provide an online career guidance service for young people choosing matriculation subjects, tertiary institutes and courses and seeking tertiary funding. We also have career guidance programs that we offer as either train-the-trainer or as a direct service to NGOs working with disadvantaged youth.

TARGET – Target gives schools a view of their internal and external performance data. Consultation services are offered to assist with interpretation of results and application of findings. Financial incentives are offered for performance improvements. Target is a collaboration between SAILI, Michael & Susan Dell Foundation and Western Cape Education Department.
