For 30 years, SAILI has supported academically promising learners from under-resourced communities through structured, accountable educational programmes. We identify, develop and support potential in students and schools by guiding top achievers into the working parts of the state education system at high-school level. We ensure that students who are academically talented in Maths and Physical Science have a good chance at fulfilling their potential and going on to tertiary studies. We add quality and competitive edge to high performing schools by referring our gifted scholars to them.

SAILI was founded in 1996, in the earliest years of post-apartheid South Africa, to widen access to Maths, Science and Industry education for learners who had been systematically shut out of it.

Three decades later, that belief still matters.

Just 17 achieve a bachelor pass for university study.

Behind these numbers are learners with talent and potential, but access to opportunity can determine how far that potential takes them.

Earlier this term, 12 of our learners attended the Living Maths Space Tour and met former NASA astronaut and science teacher Dorothy “Dottie” Metcalf-Lindenburger.

Dottie shared the 3 C’s that helped her achieve her dream:
Curious. Challenged. Courageous.

Three lessons that helped take her from aspiring astronaut to space and a reminder to our learners that big goals take curiosity, hard work and courage.

SAILI and our partner school, South Peninsula High School, were proud to host educators from the The NEA Foundation's 2026 Global Learning Fellowship during their visit to South Africa.

The Principal, Mrs Samsodien, spoke about the school’s journey and the work taking place within the school community. Our Head of Scholarships, Lana Baron, shared SAILI’s role as a scholarship organisation and the support we provide to learners.

During their visit, the Fellows spent time in classrooms, met with teachers and engaged with learners, gaining a glimpse into daily school life and the learning taking place.

It was a valuable opportunity to share experiences, exchange ideas and learn from one another across different educational contexts.

Thank you to the NEA Foundation and South Peninsula High School for being part of this global learning experience.

🌿 Learning beyond the classroom

During the school holidays, our Grade 8 learners spent a day at Nature Connect's Zeekoevlei Environmental Education Centre, exploring Ecology, Biodiversity and Sustainability.

The outing reinforced concepts they have been learning at school, giving learners the opportunity to experience science through hands-on activities and time in the natural environment.

It was a valuable opportunity to discover how science extends beyond the classroom and connects to the world around us.

A big thank you to Nature Connect for welcoming our learners and creating such an engaging learning experience.
