After a long and intensive year of training to facilitate and hold space for parents, the Parent Power Champions graduated from the program ✨🎉

We are immensely proud of the Champions for being proactive in the journey to ensure that parents are engaged and involved in their children's education.

A special shoutout to the school leaders of the schools for gracing us with their presence at the graduation.

Happy Heritage Day, Mzansi! 🇿🇦

In the true spirit of ubuntu and celebrating Heritage Day, Parent Champion, Thoba Ndlovu reflected in his mother tongue - isiZulu - on a Parent Power workshop he recently hosted for parents in his community.

This workshop is one of the ongoing workshops that Parent Champions have been hosting throughout the year to engage and involve parents in meaningful ways.

The 2024 Parent Champions meet for their last immersion this week in Johannesburg to reflect and close the journey they've been a part of since March this year. Hang around to see how their week goes.

Parent Power Schools Challenge update

On 6 August, the four schools chosen for the Parent Power Schools Challenge started activating in different parts of the country.

To date, these schools have held multiple workshops for parents in their schools, using the Parent Power Activation card as a guide.

We are proud and happy to see that these schools have been actively ensuring they engage their parents on the importance of their children's education.

We look forward to seeing what more will come in the following months.

Parent Power Activation Card domains 📚

The Parent Power Activation Card is a tool to understand the overall parental experience at your child’s school. It focuses on five domains that we believe contribute sustainably to a quality experience of education in a school.

Domain 3:
▪️Confidence in principals: It is important to feel confident with the school your child attends and the quality of education your child receives. This section gives you the opportunity to think about how confident you are in the school leadership and teachers of your child’s school.

Domain 4:
▪️Knowledge of school: Having knowledge of the school your child attends guides you in understanding the quality of education your child receives. This section is an opportunity to reflect on what you know about the school and the potential areas you may need to get further information on.

✅️The Parent Power activation card is a valuable tool designed to capture and reflect the experiences of parents regarding their children’s education.

✅️Implementing the Parent Power activation card can lead to more meaningful partnerships between parents and schools. When parents feel heard and valued, they are more likely to engage actively with the school community, contributing to a supportive environment that promotes student success.

It focuses on five key domains that contribute to a quality educational experience:

1. Happiness of My Child at School

2. Safety of My Child at School

3. Confidence in the School Principal and Staff

4. Knowledge of the School

4. Parent Power

[op-ed] It’s time to recognise that parents are powerful actors in education

With the appointment of the new Basic of Education Minister, Siviwe Gwarube, the education ecosystem has its eyes open to see how she will shift and implement strategies that aim to escalate the country's education system from what it's been.

In a TV interview she had shortly after her appointment, Gwarube assured parents that her department would focus on its core mandate rather than politics.

In the article above, Parent Power's Project Lead, Andisiwe Hlungwane, pens down the realities of parents in South Africa and how much power they have in schools to actively participate in their children’s education. In doing so, she reflects on the findings from the first nationally representative household survey commissioned by Parent Power to understand education through the eyes of parents and to develop a baseline for how parents experience and perceive quality education.
