In a Montessori classroom, the Guide does not disappear - but neither do they take over.

The Guide carefully observes the children, prepares an environment that supports their development, and introduces materials and activities at the right moment.

Then comes the important part: stepping back.

Children need opportunities to practise, make mistakes, repeat, problem-solve, and experience the satisfaction of doing something for themselves.

This requires the adult to resist the urge to help too quickly or give every answer.

Montessori asks us to trust the child’s capacity to learn - and to understand that sometimes the most valuable thing an adult can do is give the child the space to do it themselves.

From the languages we speak and the stories we share, to the traditions we pass from one generation to the next, culture becomes part of the child’s understanding of their world.

As Montessori educators, we recognise the importance of helping children discover their own cultural heritage while developing an appreciation and respect for the many cultures that surround them.

Today, we celebrate the richness and diversity of our South African heritage.

“I didn’t expect to enjoy the observation part so much.”

Before starting the course, one of our 2026 Toddler students thought being a Montessori guide would mean being active and teaching all the time.

Instead, they discovered something unexpected:
“Finding joy in silently observing a child progress and seeing how they interact with their environment has been the most fulfilling surprise of this course.”

In Montessori, observation isn't simply watching. It is learning to see the child — to notice their interests, needs, development and relationship with their environment.

🕊️ International Day of Peace | 21 September

For Maria Montessori, peace was not simply the absence of conflict. It was something we build — beginning with how we understand, guide and nurture the child.

When we give children opportunities to develop independence, empathy, respect and responsibility, we are laying foundations for a more peaceful society.

As Montessori reminds us:
"If we are among the men of good will who yearn for peace, we must lay the foundation for peace ourselves, by working for the social world of the child.”

Today, we light a candle for peace — and remember that the work of peace begins with each of us.

Emotional intelligence develops through experience.

In Montessori, children are given many opportunities to recognise their emotions, manage frustration, communicate their needs, and consider the feelings of others.

The mixed-age community provides a natural social environment where children learn to cooperate, resolve disagreements, wait for turns, offer help, and ask for assistance.

The adult also plays an important role. Rather than immediately solving every social difficulty for the child, the Montessori Guide supports children in finding respectful ways to communicate and resolve problems.

These everyday moments may seem small, but they are helping children develop skills that will serve them throughout life.

Montessori is not only preparing the child to know more. It is preparing the child to understand themselves, relate to others, and participate meaningfully in their community.

Sometimes the biggest surprise is discovering that you enjoy learning something you weren't sure you'd understand.

One of our 2026 3–6 students began the course expecting to struggle with the content.

The reality?

“I never expected to enjoy all the content as much as I do.”
