When an ex comes back, it's natural to wonder whether they've finally realised what they lost. Maybe they miss you, maybe they've been thinking about the relationship or maybe they genuinely want another chance.

But missing someone and being ready to build a healthier relationship are two different things.

Before you get caught up in what they say you need to carefully look at what has actually changed.
Have they taken responsibility for what went wrong? Have they addressed the issues that broke you apart, and are they willing to do things differently, even when it's difficult?

You don't have to shut the door on someone just because they left, yet you don't have to open it just because they came back, either.

Would you give an ex another chance, or is some trust too difficult to rebuild?

Letting go isn’t pretending you stopped caring. It’s accepting what you can’t control, stopping the chase, and choosing your own healing even when part of you still wants them back. Save this for the days when moving on feels harder than it should.

There's a difference between being sorry that you hurt someone and being sorry that you have to face the consequences.

Real remorse isn't just about the tears, the apologies or the promises made when someone is afraid of losing you but it's also about what happens when things settle down.

Can they take responsibility without blaming you?
Can they be honest when the truth is uncomfortable?
Can they accept that rebuilding trust takes time rather than expecting you to get over it?

Words matter but so does what a person does after they've said them and sometimes, the hardest thing is accepting that an apology doesn't automatically repair the damage.

What makes an apology feel genuine to you?

Giving someone a second chance is one thing yet feeling safe with them again is another thing.

You can choose to forgive someone for breaking your heart and still have questions. Also you can want the relationship to work and still be afraid of being hurt again. And you can love someone while recognising that love alone won't rebuild what was broken.

What matters after betrayal is more than a promise that it will never happen again. It's honesty, accountability, changed behaviour and the willingness to rebuild trust over time.

A second chance is an opportunity, it isn't proof that things have changed.

If someone betrayed your trust, what would you need to see before you could believe things were different?

Giving someone a second chance doesn't mean you have to ignore what happened. Their past behaviour, genuine remorse and willingness to change can tell you a lot — but promises alone aren't enough.

If you're struggling with whether to stay or walk away, remember: you can forgive someone without giving them unlimited chances to hurt you.

Sometimes, the hardest part of being betrayed isn't just what the other person did. It's what happens to you afterwards. You start questioning things you never questioned before, the memories, the promises, even your own judgement. You wonder how someone who professed they loved you all this time could put you through something like that.

And when people tell you to move on, they don't always understand that you're not just trying to get over a person but you're trying to make sense of what happened and learn how to trust again. Healing takes time and you don't have to pretend you're okay just to make other people comfortable or to try to put up a brave face for the world.

What's been the hardest part of rebuilding yourself after someone betrayed you and broke your trust?

22/09/2026

Betrayal can change the way you see love, trust and even yourself. If you choose to stay, healing requires more than an apology — it requires patience, honesty, transparency and real responsibility.

Save this for the days when you’re wondering why you’re still hurting.

Sometimes the person who makes cheating easy to hide isn't the cheater — it's the partner who loves them enough to believe them. Trust, loyalty and forgiveness are good qualities, but in the wrong hands, they can be taken advantage of.

A secret relationship can feel real, intense, and impossible to walk away from — until you realise you’re building a future with someone who was never fully available. If someone wants a life with you, they should be able to choose you openly, not keep you in the shadows.

Your ex coming back can feel like everything you wanted — but sometimes they’re coming back because they miss your attention, their new relationship failed, or they’re afraid of losing access to you. Before you let them back into your life, look at their past behaviour and ask yourself whether you actually want them back.
