More than 50,000 people over age 50 in the U.S. currently participate in triathlons, according to USA Triathlon, America's national governing body for the sport.
So the answer to the question posed on our poster is yes: you definitely can do a triathlon event in your fifties.
But just because you can, doesn't always mean that you should. So is triathlon a good way to exercise for a person more senior?
Getting regular exercise is crucial to good health. But as we age, we need to be more careful with how we train, because we are more prone to injury.
One way to reduce exercise-induced injuries is to cross-train, which simply means mixing it up by doing different types of exercise each day. Cross-training is considered a form of "active rest" because it gives various body zones proper time to recover and repair between workouts, preventing overtraining and therefore, injury.
Training for a triathlon is essentially cross-training: The three segments of the sport - swimming, cycling and running - work different bones, joints and muscle groups, so theoretically there is less risk of injury from repeated stress. This is good news for over-50 athletes!

Despite the constant back and forth about eggs and health, itβs a myth that eggs are bad for you because of their cholesterol content. Studies show that they have minimal effect on blood cholesterol in the majority of people, and theyβre a great source of protein and nutrients.
Additionally, a review involving 263,938 people found that egg intake had no association with heart disease risk.

Strength and resistance training are some of the best forms of exercises you can do to strengthen your muscles and improve your body composition.
It may also lead to important improvements in metabolic health, including improved insulin sensitivity β meaning your blood sugar levels are easier to manage β and increases in your metabolic rate, or how many calories you burn at rest.
If you do not have weights, you can use your own body weight or resistance bands to create resistance and get a comparable workout with many of the same benefits.
