BENEFITS OF LIFE COACHING FOR TEACHERS
Self-Discovery Through Introspection
Teachers are guided on a journey of self-discovery and empowerment by answering a series of probing and thought-provoking questions. Observing previous patterns of behavior, they assess what works, what doesn’t, and what used to work but no longer does.
Self-Evaluation
By assessing themselves and their actions, teachers become aware of the impact they have on their students, peers, management, and school. They learn to honestly evaluate their success in each area, bringing awareness to aspects that need attention and improvement. They develop their own plan of action to implement these improvements, along with quantitative and achievable objectives.
Considering Different Perspectives
It’s human nature to become stuck in one’s own perspectives and habits, focusing on justifications which support that view – and disregarding those that don’t. Teachers are trained to define their perspectives and actions objectively, to analyze and evaluate them, and to find other potential solutions – observing, analyzing, and evaluating the merits of each. Through a process of elimination, outdated thinking patterns and techniques are replaced with more empowering and effective practices.
Clarification of Purpose
A teacher’s purpose, of course, is to teach. But what does that really entail? Simply imparting knowledge? Or significantly impacting the lives of students, building their self-awareness and confidence, and providing them with tools to successfully navigate their futures as accomplished individuals and global citizens? Teachers explore what being a teacher means to them, what it is that they want to achieve, and how they can become the teacher they want to be, and their students need them to be.
Heightened Self-Awareness and Confidence
Decisions are easily made, but difficult to implement without constant awareness of one’s actions and their impacts in each moment. Teachers learn techniques to observe themselves and become aware of their interactions as they happen, helping them to make good choices in the moment. As well as becoming aware of areas needing improvement, teachers also become aware of their successes. And with each tangible success, ever-growing confidence in their roles and ability.
Overcoming Fears
We live in a fear-based society. Ten minutes of watching the news or TV adverts can attest to this. Fear is a powerful adversary because by its very nature, it is subtle and all pervasive. Most people aren’t even aware of the fears that guide their actions. We are all simply products of our environments and experiences – the good and the bad. Workshops provide a safe place for teachers to become aware of their fears and explore how these fears impact their lives and roles as teachers, thereby directly affecting their students.
Teachers acquire tools to safely recognize, observe, and overcome their fears and receive the support they need during the process. Freedom from fear is true liberty, and teachers who are no longer held in the cold grip of this invisible force become more contented, confident, and adventurous individuals and teachers.
Accountability
Humans tend to blame their circumstances on their environment or other people, thereby negating their power to change and improve their situation. Teachers recognize their own roles in creating their circumstances and are guided to take responsibility for both the positive and negative outcomes of their actions and situations.
Empowerment
With accountability comes empowerment. Once teachers recognize themselves as the masters of their destiny, they are empowered to create experiences that meet their expectations. An empowered teacher teaches with passion and dedication as they take responsibility for providing their students with the best possible learning experience.
Taking Action
Once teachers have reflected on the topic of the month, considered the outcome that they wish to achieve, and explored various potential avenues to get there, the next step is to take action. This is where many well-intentioned people faulter. Highly motivated, they begin their quest with dedication and energy – and a long list of ‘things to do’. This quickly becomes overwhelming, with the end result being that they give up before they’ve even really started.
In our workshops, we take it slowly. One step at a time. Our question to teachers is, “What are two things that you can start doing right now towards achieving your goal?” Those ‘Two Things’ become their primary focus for the next month, as they consciously implement them throughout each day.
An example is of a teacher who felt she wasn’t able to connect with her students in a meaningful way. Upon reflection, she realized that she had been so afraid of losing control of her students, that she’d focused on being strict and no-nonsense. She understood that her students were a little afraid of her and didn’t find her approachable. She decided that her goals would be to smile at her students more and consciously connect with each student individually.
For the next month she consciously smiled at every student she came into contact with and made a focused effort to connect personally with each student. And she saw results! Before the end of the first week, some students had even started helping to carry her bags and books to the car at the end of each day. These days she’s a much-loved teacher to her students, who follow her rules because they respect her, not because they fear her.
Remaining Focused and Motivated
Only having two goals to achieve, it’s easy for teachers to remain focused on the tasks they have set for themselves, and seeing positive results keeps them motivated. During our workshops, once teachers have reflected on their situations, decided what end result they are working towards, and set their two goals, they partner with another teacher in a chat room where they share their insights. By verbalizing the process, it reinforces and strengthens the experience, and galvanizes teachers to take action and responsibility.
Achieving Goals
Our workshops help teachers to define, establish, and achieve long-term goals, but we also focus on day-to-day and short-term goals. We provide a framework for teachers to follow to prioritize their goals and achieve them easily and successfully.
Effective Communication
As such an integral part of their students’ lives, it’s important for teachers to understand that the way they speak, becomes their students own self-talk, even well into their adult lives. Teachers have a responsibility to use their words kindly, inspiring and encouraging their students, not breaking their spirits.
Listening empathetically and without judgement is an all but forgotten art, yet an integral part of making students feel validated and valued. In our workshops teachers learn to listen and hear what their students are saying, as well as what they’re struggling to say.
Building Better Relationships
Through the process of self-realization teachers develop an increased sense of empathy towards themselves and the path they’ve taken to get to where they now find themselves. As their relationship with self improves, so too do their outer relationships. They connect better with their students, students’ parents, co-workers, and management. Their growth also impacts their personal relationships positively.
Navigating Life Effectively
The workshops we offer provide teachers with the skills and tools they need to navigate all areas of their lives in a constructive and impactful way. Teachers who lead contented, balanced lives perform better in their classrooms, sharing the best of themselves with their students.
Continued Empowerment and Student Empowerment
With slight adaptions, teachers can use what they’ve learned to improve any and all areas of their lives that are not functioning at their highest capacity. But best of all, they can share the techniques with their students, taking them on a journey of self-discovery and empowerment too. At the end of each workshop, teachers receive a template to work from to incorporate in their lessons, guiding their students towards becoming their best selves.
