Our recent freediving week was a massive success and we owe a huge shoutout to the amazing facilitators Ethan September and Brandon Plaatjies who guided the sessions.

What made this week so special was how they seamlessly wove their deep marine biology expertise into the free diving sessions. They didn’t just teach the skills, they gave our students insights into the marine life we encounted and the importance of the ecosystems they inhabit.

This impactful week was only possible because of your generosity. Thank you to everyone who donated towards these sessions and invested in our students’ futures!

South Africa continues to face a severe gender-based violence and femicide crisis. The statistics aren’t just numbers, the victims are real women and children whose lives safety and protection.

Today we walked in solidarity alongside wavesforchange to remember their names, to share a moment of silence for the lives lost and remind our communities that there is power in numbers.

Our core water skills module has officially started. First up, swimming fundamentals with Blue Water Aquatics facilitated by Adele Wannenburgh and Kaiti

We begin in a heated pool, an enclosed environment with shallow options, where the students feel safe enough to learn these new skills and have fun. Empowering young people to explore curiosity and confidence in the water is potentially lifesaving,
Blue Water Aquatics guided our students at their own pace, covering a range of techniques, form, water safety and breath control.

A massive thank you to Blue Water Aquatics for such a powerful time in the water and for laying a solid foundation for all the water activities upcoming in the programme.

After spending a week with Gabriel exploring what activism can look and feel like, the students were ready to take those conversations beyond the classroom.

Thinking about the issues that matter to us, what we have the power to change and how we can show up for the places we call home.

From there, the students identified a local dumping site as the focus of their Community Activation. They brainstormed ideas, got stuck in, sorted the waste and took it to a local waste facility.

It was messy, fun and so full of energy. But mostly, it was theirs. An idea they had shaped themselves, carried through together and turned into something real.

A week of Ocean Activism with Gabriel from Climate Justice Coalition

Our cohort got to explore the interconnected reality of activism and how climate, inequality, housing, food, education, race and so many of the issues we face are never really separate from one another.

These conversations were brought to life through playful, sometimes challenging exercises that helped our young people see those connections for themselves. There was a lot of thinking, questioning and unlearning, but also a lot of play, laughter and permission to be curious.

Most importantly, the week was about giving young people tools to navigate the systems around them, while reminding them that their voices already matter.

Thank you Gabriel for showing up as fully as you did and leaving the room a little more activated than you found it.

This World Photography Day, we’re turning our eyes beneath the surface.

We’re celebrating three local creatives who use their cameras to reveal the incredible worlds unfolding beneath our waters. Through their work, they bring us closer to the textures, movements and quiet wonder of our ocean.

There is so much power in making something visible. In helping people fall in love with places they may never have explored, notice the life they may have overlooked and understand why these ecosystems are worth knowing, valuing and protecting.

And we know this list is far from complete…

Who else should we be seeing?

Tag the local underwater image-makers, ocean storytellers and visual artists whose work deserves a wider audience. Let’s fill the comments with the people helping us see our ocean in new ways 🌊

Our Ocean Hub students are getting ready to deepen their water skills and explore the ocean firsthand and we need your support to get them equipped 🌊

We’re looking for 20 mask + snorkel sets for our students. Each set costs around R900, with a total fundraising goal of R18,000.

You can support by donating new or gently used gear, sponsoring a full set or contributing any amount towards the cost.

The equipment will become part of our Ocean Hub gear kit, supporting first cohort and future participants as they build confidence, skills and connection to the ocean.

This Womens Day, we honour the women who came before us and the futures they dared to imagine.

The work continues in the spaces we create, the communities we nurture and the possibilities we make room for.

Some of the most beautiful moments we’ve witnessed this year haven’t been planned lessons or activities, they’ve been the relationships growing quietly between young people.

We’ve watched them show up for one another, celebrate each other, hold space for difficult days, laugh until they can’t breathe and slowly build a community rooted in trust and care. It’s something we often struggle to put into words, but it’s one of the greatest privileges of this work…watching young people discover that they don’t have to carry the world alone.

This Friendship Day, we’re celebrating the community these young people have created together. They continue to teach us that care is something we practice with others and that another way of being together is not only possible, but already happening.

Happy Friendship Day. May we all find and nurture spaces that feel like home.
