🎉 Join us in congratulating UCT MedTech’s Lehan Hefer for achieving an outstanding 95% on his thesis and completing his Masters in Biomedical Engineering! 🥳🎓
Lehan’s thesis, “The Design and Development of a Speculum-Free Cervical Cancer Screening Device,” focused on creating a Point of Care tool for cervical cancer screening and enhancing women’s health.
This incredible study was supervised by UCT MedTech’s Prof. Sudesh Sivarasu and Dr. Rakiya Saidu, and funded by merSETA Social and the National Research Foundation of South Africa (NRF). We’re immensely grateful for their support.

UCT MedTech takes on the AKTO Leeds Summit 2024!
Professor Sudesh Sivarasu, Michael Awood, and Ansuya Chetty, winner of SoMeDesign 2023, have arrived safely in the UK ready to spark innovation and collaboration.
Joining virtually from South Africa, Dr. Oluwamayowa Ogundaini, PhD., will also be part of this transformative experience.
Over the next few days, our team will dive deep into discussions on frugal innovation design, sharing insights and exploring groundbreaking partnerships in healthcare technology.

UCT MedTech’s Prof. Sudesh Sivarasu will be presenting at the esteemed IMDEA Materials Institute, a key part of the Madrid Institute for Advanced Studies (IMDEA) network. The IMDEA Materials Institute, founded in 2007 by Madrid’s regional government, is one of seven distinguished public research centres under the IMDEA umbrella.
Prof. Sivarasu will be sharing insights on the topic: “Developing Impactful Medical Devices in International Context.” This presentation promises to be a significant contribution to the field, highlighting innovative approaches and global perspectives on medical device development. The importance of international collaboration in driving innovation and creating solutions that benefit people worldwide cannot be overstated.

Very pleased to congratulate UCT MedTech’s Qhamani Maqungu on achieving an impressive 79% for his thesis component in his Masters in Biomedical Engineering!
Qhamani’s thesis, titled “Design and Development of an Autoinjector Tracking Device to Integrate with Emergency Services,” demonstrates innovative thinking and dedication to advancing medical technology.
This significant achievement was made possible under the guidance of Prof Sudesh Sivarasu and co-supervisor Dr Bessie Malila, with generous funding from NRF, MerSETA, THRIP and Impulse Biomedical.

Congratulations Edmund Wessels for completing your PhD in Biomedical Engineering under the exceptional guidance of Prof. Sudesh Sivarasu.
His incredible research focused on developing a novel mobile flexible hysteroscopy system for outpatient procedures without general anaesthesia. This work marks a significant advancement in women’s gynecological care.
A special acknowledgment goes to the National Research Foundation (NRF) for their financial support, as well as the Technology Innovation Agency (TIA) and the University of Cape Town (UCT) for their invaluable support by funding this research.

Prof Sudesh Sivarasu delivered an insightful lecture titled "Frugal Innovation is NOT Cheap" to the executive leadership course in global surgery at UCT this morning.
His lecture highlighted the importance of frugal innovation in addressing healthcare challenges in low-resource settings and emphasized that frugality is not about compromising on quality but rather about finding innovative ways to achieve the same or better outcomes with limited resources.
The lecture was attended by a diverse group of executive leaders in global surgery. t was a great opportunity for them to learn from one of the leading experts in the field of frugal innovation and gain insights on how to apply these principles in their work.
