5 YEARS OR EVEN LONGER AGO, had told me, just how much Autism would of changed my life, I would never of believed you.
TODAY is Autism Awareness Day and I'd like to share my journey with you.
Having taught in Mainstream school from early adulthood into 13 years of experience teaching neuro typical kids, nothing coud prepare me for the personal development, patience levels, frustration and complete and utter amazement at this diagnosis that so few people know or understand.
I am the proud owner of a learning environment of children who are regular and different. Most have autism spectrum disorder.
Autism isn’t as foreign as it was even five years ago. With awareness spreading, whether it be through tv shows that highlight a main character on the spectrum, YouTube channels and popular blogs, or even viral videos, people are getting a glimpse into the daily battles an autistic person, specifically what little people can face.
There is no shortage of articles and social media posts that lament the struggles of special needs parenting or teaching. I find myself crying along with some and other times reading in disbelief, like the author is inside my head, hearing my innermost thoughts that I’ve never spoken to another soul.
But the thing is, there is something beautiful about being a educator to these wonderfully unique children on the spectrum and that’s something I think we forget to share. They see things from a completely unordinary perspective and it has changed how I look at life, in the best way.
We Celebrate ALL the Wins
Children on the spectrum may not meet the same milestones at the same time as their neurotypical peers. It can be hard to hear your friends discussing things their children are doing knowing your child isn’t currently capable of doing the same things.
They may not talk on time, or ever. They may not be able to focus through a dance class or handle the noise of a soccer league.
They may not have a best friend that they have sleepovers with or even want to invite over to play. So we’ve started celebrating our own wins and it’s made a huge difference in our perspective.
We celebrate verbally asking for what you want. We celebrate handling a routine change without having a meltdown.
We celebrate talking to a new kid at the park and then playing with them.
And most of all, we celebrate being different.
Being thankful for progress and recognizing a win goes a long way towards morale.
You will have days that are long. Days that are hard. Days where you’re not sure you can make it until bedtime. Things will break. Messes will be made. Tantrums will be thrown, both in public and behind closed doors.
You’ll worry about their future. Worry about their siblings. Worry about your sanity. Worry about the job you’re doing. Worry about your marriage. Tears will be shed, some days by them, some days by you, and some days by both.
You’ll question your strength. You’ll question God and this calling that’s been put on you as the parent or educator. You may think this is too much. But you’ll never quit. I will never quit because er serve an incredible living God.
Parents of children with autism spectrum disorder get up day after day and do it again and again. Because we love them and we will fight for them EVERY.SINGLE.DAY.
It is truly amazing to know that there is a love so pure that will keep you fighting day after day. A love that has taught me, needs no words.
Embrace Their Strengths and Don’t Stress About Their Struggles
Unfortunately, for years, being different has been looked at as a bad thing. But it seems that society is slowly trying to change that stereotype. Be part of this change, create awareness,
My favourite people in the whole wide world are people who aren’t afraid to be themselves, no matter how wonderfully “weird” they may seem. Being different is what makes us all unique and it is something to be celebrated, not feared or made fun of.
We are raising and loving children who see the world differently, who feel everything so intensely, and can teach us a thing or two if we are willing to see the lessons.
We are getting a very special look on life that not everyone else gets to see, and it’s beautiful.
Today I celebrate, Autism,
I celebrate the little people who have taken up all the space in my heart, the ones who teach me every day, just who God wants us to be.
Thank you:

and all the ones to come,
For being my lighthouse and letting me love you just the way God created you.
I am blessed.

Have you ever considered a gifted child as "special needs"? Because essentially they need interventions just like any other child.
We really should move away from using the term "special needs" and focus more on accommodating growth, development and celebrating difference from an early age
Essentially, children are human first.
They all have needs.
At Happy Heart Academy we celebrate all our children, just as they are.

We all need to feel special, be special or be treated in a special way.

Our Senses - We learned about the ability to hear, touch, see, taste, and smell. The 5 senses allow us to learn and make decisions about the world around us.
