🌸 Celebrating Women in Science this Women’s Day 🌸

Today, we celebrate the women who ask bold questions, challenge what we think we know, turn evidence into action, and use science to make lives better.

At the SAMRC/CPUT Cardiometabolic Health Research Unit, we are incredibly proud to celebrate the women among our staff, researchers, students, clinicians and collaborators, women who are contributing every day to a deeper understanding of cardiometabolic health and to better healthcare in South Africa and around the world. ❤️🔬

From the laboratory to the clinic, from data to discovery, and from classrooms to communities, their work is helping us understand the complex challenges of cardiovascular and metabolic disease and find better ways to prevent, detect and manage them.

But today is about more than achievements and publications. It is about people:

🔸️It is about the women who mentor the next generation.
🔸️The students finding their scientific voices.
🔸️The researchers persevering through challenges.
🔸️The colleagues who lift others as they rise.
🔸️And the women who continue to show that science is stronger, more creative and more impactful when diverse voices are at the table.

We also honour and remember the women in science who are no longer with us, whose contributions continue to inspire and shape the path for those who follow. We especially remember Prof Tandi Matsha-Erasmus, who led by example, championed excellence and opened doors for other women in science. Her legacy continues through the people she inspired, the opportunities she created and the work that carries her vision forward. 💜

To every woman at the SAMRC/CPUT Cardiometabolic Health Unit: thank you. Thank you for your curiosity, your courage, your resilience, your leadership and your commitment to improving health.

Your work matters.
Your voice matters.
Your discoveries matter.
And the future of science is brighter because you are part of it. 💜

It is with deep sorrow that we, the SAMRC/CPUT Cardiometabolic Health Research Unit (CMHRU), mourn the passing of our beloved Unit Director, Professor Tandi Matsha-Erasmus

Prof Matsha-Erasmus was a towering figure in our academic and research community, an exceptional scientist, a visionary leader, and a deeply committed mentor. She led with purpose, humility, and an unwavering belief in people and in the power of science to change lives.

To us, she was more than a director. She was our guide, our strength, and the heart of this unit. Her presence shaped our work, our values, and our sense of purpose.

We are devastated by this loss. Yet we remain profoundly grateful for the privilege of having walked this journey under her leadership. Her legacy will continue to live in the work we do, the students she mentored, and the lives she impacted across South Africa and beyond.

We extend our heartfelt condolences to her family, friends, colleagues, and all who had the honour of knowing her.

Rest in peace, Prof. You will be deeply missed, but never forgotten💐

A huge congratulations to Danie Botes on completing his Master’s in Biomedical Science. He conducted his research at the SAMRC/CPUT Cardiometabolic Health Research Unit, where his hard work and dedication truly shone.

A big well-deserved recognition also goes to his supervisors, Dr Lisa Graham, Dr Don Matshazi, and Dr Cecil Jack Weale, for their invaluable guidance and support throughout this journey. 👏
