Noticing, and being aware of, how our little ones want to learn and how they structure their own curiosity and needs to make sense of the world around them - helps us to set up play environments that meet them in their needs.

๐ŸŒธ We create a richly diverse learning space for them
๐ŸŒธ We provide the tools for them to learn in their own way
๐ŸŒธ We encourage their curiosity and love of learning
๐ŸŒธ We see things through their eyes
๐ŸŒธ We help them process and help those little brains to fire off on all levels of development
๐ŸŒธ We validate their processing skills and give them the space to take control of their own knowledge

๐Ÿฆ” Learning schemas are a great tool to help assist us understand their learning better and to guide us in setting up rich invitations to learn.

I love working on presentations together with my little ones in my afternoon learning support sessions!

๐ŸŒป In the foundation phase, orals are very much supported by big, bold bright, creative and fun posters or visual cues.

๐ŸŒป This helps to give them the confidence to talk about something theyโ€™ve created and acts as a reminder of their key points if the nerves hit.

๐ŸŒป We had so much fun planning, prepping, creating and practising. I love seeing them express their creativity in all different ways ๐Ÿ’›

Love an open ended play set up - building Dino bridges was the outcome of this play invitation ๐Ÿฆ•

Little ones will naturally do what they do best - play. This, more often than not, requires very little prompting, complicated set-ups or time consuming planning. Give them a few open-ended tools, follow their interests and use their curiosity as your baseline, theyโ€™ll do the rest.

At the end of the day - theyโ€™re the play experts, itโ€™s inherit in who they are!

๐ŸฆŠ Enjoy! x

Confidence in reading and word recognition takes lots of patience and the room to practice confidently.

Simple tricks can help boost word recognition:

๐ŸŒฟ Use a ruler to focus on one sentence at a time
๐ŸŒฟ Point at each word as they read it focusing on one thing at a time
๐ŸŒฟ Re-read the sentence as a whole after getting each word - hearing it out as a sequence helps to comprehend the words in action
๐ŸŒฟ Donโ€™t forget to pause at punctuation and practice how the sentence ends - animated, question or statement
๐ŸŒฟ Use all the visual cues on the page - talk about the pictures and what it adds to the story before reading to help them comprehend and understand the words. Bonus - helping with story telling, enriching vocab and creativity
๐ŸŒฟ If they donโ€™t know the word - cover it and let them say the words before and after as clues it to try and figure out what it could be
๐ŸŒฟ Sound the word out letter by letter or sound by sound depending on their stage of reading. Over emphasise sounds so they can hear the connection
๐ŸŒฟ Talk about the word - how does it sound, feel in their mouth and what other words sound like it or have the same combination
๐ŸŒฟ Keep a word dictionary - write down words you figured out together
๐ŸŒฟ Reversing letters or struggling to distinguish between similar styled letters (b,p,q,d) is very common. Simple exercises practicing visual perception can help conquer this e.g. odd one out, spot the differences, letter hunt or colour by letter

Happy reading! ๐ŸฆŠ

These 6 concepts are not easy to maintain and certainly not something I tick off every day. Sometimes I only manage one, on a good day a handful - but these are what I work on every day, to do at least one really really well.

๐ŸฆŠ What we find is an age where our toddlers are learning their own limitations and boundaries, the capacity of those around them, and how to maintain an emotional balance when feeling very big, complicated feelings that they themselves don't understand.

๐ŸŒฟ By working on these 6 elements, I find myself observing an emotionally heightened response or action from a far less triggered state of mind, these strategies help to detangle me from it and assist me to remain calm when responding.

๐ŸŒฟ I am able to see what they need (e.g. please pick me up, I feel overwhelmed and unsure of myself), not what I need (e.g. please stop crying and how can I achieve that in the easiest way possible!).

๐ŸŒฟ Finally, I feel patient, calm, and equipped to maintain firm consistent boundaries whilst not afraid to provide choices and allow them the freedom to make their own reasonable decisions within this boundary.

๐Ÿพ As always - these are just my learnings and ideas, and I hope this can help or provide a bit of confidence on your journey with your tiny tot x
