A fox curled up asleep. Nothing unusual — until you see it through a thermal camera.
The body is almost completely grey and cold. But the nose, ears, and eyes glow bright orange. That contrast isn't random. It's one of the most elegant survival systems in nature.

A red fox grows a winter coat so thick and so well-insulated that almost no body heat escapes through it. Scientists using thermal cameras found that the tail loses virtually zero heat to the environment — it's essentially invisible on the image. The shoulders, back, and flanks radiate very little as well.

The only parts that glow are the ones covered in shorter fur — the nose, ears, the area around the eyes. These account for just 30% of the fox's body surface, and that's exactly where heat is meant to escape. It's a built-in temperature regulation system, not a flaw.

And the sleeping position isn't random either. By curling into a tight ball and wrapping its tail around its nose and paws, the fox reduces the surface area exposed to the cold by as much as possible. Research shows this posture alone can preserve up to 30% more body heat compared to other resting positions.

What looks like a glowing fox is actually a masterclass in biological engineering — developed over millions of years, requiring no power source, no maintenance, and no upgrades.

Nature figured this out long before we did.
