While asking a group of teachers what inquiry based learning means to them, one teacher answered: “It’s giving the child a voice to their choice”

A teacher recently mentioned to us that she is concerned that her class is not engaging in the provocations and invitations offered to them.
Asking her what the children were doing she said they were happily moving around the class in small groups, chatting and encouraging each other along the way.
What an amazing statement!
THEY ARE BUILDING RELATIONSHIPS!
Relationships are at the very heart of the Reggio Emilia philosophy. That philosophy is reflected in an environment that encircles the child with a sense of security.
This teacher has done an amazing job at ensuring her environment reflects the image of the child leaving them feeling capable and safe.
This just reiterated to us the importance of provoking the desire to build relationships and community.

“Somehow, learning to be open to unexpected surprises has allowed us to become more comfortable with inviting others into our enquiries, where we move beyond the model where the teacher is the ultimate expert and the classroom is his (or her) sole domain.”
