Today, we honour the bravery of the young people of 1976 who stood up for their right to a better education and a brighter future.

Their courage continues to inspire us to create schools where every child can thrive, every teacher is supported and every young person is empowered to achieve their full potential.

At ILI, we believe that strengthening school leadership strengthens the future of South Africa. This Youth Day, we celebrate the resilience, talent and limitless possibility of our nation’s youth.

The future is not something we wait for. It is something we build - together.

Many school improvement efforts begin with energy and optimism.

A new strategy is introduced.

Training takes place.

Goals are established.

Expectations are clear.

Yet months later, very little has changed.

Why?

Because school improvement does not happen simply because people know what to do.

It happens when they are supported to do it consistently.

One of the biggest challenges in education is the gap between learning and implementation.

Educators attend workshops.

Leadership teams develop plans.

Schools identify priorities.

But without ongoing support, accountability and reflection, even the best intentions can lose momentum.

Most stalled improvement efforts are not the result of a lack of commitment.

They are the result of insufficient support for implementation.

Sustainable improvement requires more than knowledge.

It requires leadership practices that keep improvement efforts moving forward.

This is where coaching plays a critical role.

Coaching helps leaders bridge the gap between knowing and doing, turning learning into action and intention into consistent practice.

At ILI, we have seen how coaching helps school leaders move beyond short-term initiatives and build lasting improvement.

When leaders are supported over time, implementation becomes more consistent.

Teams become more aligned.

Teaching practices become stronger.

And learner outcomes improve.

School improvement is not a single event.

It is an ongoing process.

The question is not whether schools have access to good ideas.

The question is whether they have the support needed to implement those ideas effectively.
